Valentine’s Day is supposed to be celebrated with someone you love, right? That’s what I thought too until I faced betrayal. Let me give you a bit of a backstory. I was dating this guy (let’s call him Abhinav) for one year. Our classmates, teachers, close friends and even the watchmen knew about us. We were the most popular couple in college and everything we did, made headlines. While I was madly in love with Abhinav, I knew that before dating him, he was in a relationship with a girl from his school.
They broke up on a bitter note and it had been almost two years since they last spoke (or at least that’s I thought). However, one day when I was chillin’ at his place after college, I noticed him go into the bathroom and pick up a phone call. The curious me followed him. I never suspected it would turn out to be a girl on the line, but it was. Not just any random girl, his ex! What broke my heart, even more, was that he said, “I miss you too”. I know of her name because he had mentioned it a couple of times to me when we were friends. I didn’t know how to react after hearing what he said, but what I did know was that I had to pull myself together and act as if nothing happened. When he came out of the bathroom, I casually asked him who was on the phone and he said it was his mother and she had no idea that he and I were alone in the house. As much as I wanted to believe him, my heart knew the truth.
That night, I slept over it. We met in college again and things felt the same. He was his fun, playful, annoying self. It’s like that conversation with his ex did not happen at all. I kept my calm and decided to let this one slip. With Valentine’s Day around the corner, I did not want us to make a scene out of this.
While Valentine’s Day was just two days away, we had no plans. He didn’t bring it up, and it was killing me to know whether we’re going to be doing something or not. I thought he’d surprise me on V-Day at 12 am, but he didn’t. No calls, no sweet text msgs, no cake, nothing. To add to the stress, my friends started asking me about what my plans were. The suspense was killing me when he didn’t turn up to college in the morning. Where was he? Who was he with? These thoughts drove me insane. When I called him, he spoke in hushed tones and said he was at the hospital with his mom. My silly heart believed him again. I told him to take care of her and let me know if I could help in any way. When people asked me where he was and if we had any V-Day plans – I confidently told them he had a family emergency.
Deep down though I still felt a slight hint of suspicion, but I made peace with it. After college, I decided to pay him a surprise visit with cake, but little did I know that I would be the one in for a surprise. As I reached his block, I saw him walking out of the building gate. He was with a girl, hand-in-hand and her head rested on his shoulder. I was shattered, but more than that I was furious. He had not only lied to me but also cheated on me (that too on Valentine’s Day). I broke it off with him that night.

I came home and cried into my pillow. It felt like my entire universe had crashed. I checked my phone hoping to at least receive a text from him – nothing. He ghosted on me. He ignored me in class and avoided confrontation. Even though I’ve passed out of college, the experience has left me scarred. I mean, we haven’t spoken to each other about why he chose to go back to his ex and why he lied to me. Maybe that’s something I’ll never know.
