The silver medal India won in the Commonwealth Games of 2014 in women’s weightlifting category has finally turned gold this year, all thanks to Saikhom Mirabai Chanu (48kg). The 23-year-old Manipuri woman has broken three records in the span of six minutes by pulling off clean lifts in all her three attempts (80kg, 84kg and 86kg) giving India it’s first gold medal in the ongoing Commonwealth Games.
That’s not all, she then lifted more than double her body weight (103kg, 107kg and 110kg) in three attempts successfully and claimed the overall Games record as well. Her previous best, a total lift of 194kg, achieved in the World Championships a few months ago was beaten at these games with a total of 196kg.
