If you’ve been keeping tabs on music award ceremonies since the turn of the millennium, you’d know Miley Cyrus is no stranger to the nominations list. Yet, this year’s Grammys were a different ball game altogether, with Cyrus snagging six nominations and two wins. A first for Hannah Montana, who didn’t just show up; she made a statement, dazzling on the red carpet in an avant-garde, all-metal Maison Margiela ensemble.
But even amidst the shimmer and shine, it was her bold, voluminous hairstyle that truly captivated the audience!
The Mane Attraction
Bob Recine, Cyrus’ trusted hairstylist, was the architect behind the voluminous marvel that made heads turn at the Grammys. Taking risks and hair to new heights, Cyrus’s back-combed hairdo was inspired by an array of pop icons, including her godmother Dolly Parton.
Contrary to the comparisons though, Recine cites a ’70s punk Raquel Welch’ as the true muse for the evening. The goal was to make it,”…dry and big through teasing, but not like the old way where it would be coiffed. We wanted it to be a little messy where you could see some of the teasing,” wrote Recine on his Instagram. This look was all about being bold and messy, showcasing the raw edge of teasing without losing sophistication.
Recine’s toolkit for the night included Nexxus Epic Shine Anti-Humidity Spray (unavailable in India, dupe below) and Prep&Protect Heat Defense Spray (unavailable in India, dupe below) to damp hair, layered it with XXL Volume Hairspray to sculpt those signature voluminous curls. The final touch, Nexxus Repair and Nourish Hair Oil (unavailable in India) added that extra sheen and volume.
Beyond the Glam
What set Cyrus’s Grammy hairstyle apart was its fluidity. Despite the volume, Recine ensured the style retained movement, avoiding the stiffness typically associated with high-volume hairstyles. This approach allowed Cyrus’s hair to have a life of its own, moving with her and adding to the dynamism of her overall presence.
In a night filled with celebration, Cyrus’s win was twofold: she not only garnered recognition for her musical talent but also left an indelible mark on the Grammy’s style history, proving once again why she remains an icon both on and off the stage.
