Met Gala’s 2024 Theme Is All About Preserving History, Craftsmanship & Nature & We’re All For It
“Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” is the theme for the upcoming 2024 Costume Institute exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. You may think (as we did too) that this will mean we’ll be seeing lots of Sleeping Beauty references at the gala, but the theme holds a much deeper implication.
250 rare items drawn from the Costume Institute’s permanent collection, many of which were created over 400 years ago, are set to be placed in the exhibition. These will include designs by Schiaparelli, Dior, Givenchy, etc.
Along with this, the exhibit aims to highlight items that are so rare and fragile that they can never be worn again. So, what’s interesting is that the most fragile pieces will be displayed using mediums such as video animation, light projection, AI, CGI, and other forms of sensory stimulation. How fascinating is this? This instance, I feel, is a prime example of how we should be utilising technology.
Apart from this, we’ll also be seeing themes of nature within the exhibition, as mentioned by Andrew Bolton, Curator in Charge of the Costume Institute. The exhibition will be centred around three aspects of nature – Land, Sea, and Sky.
‘It is very much an ode to nature and the emotional poetics of fashion.’
– Bolton
Here are some of the predictions, observations and opinions people have expressed about what they think we’ll be seeing in the gala as well as the exhibition. Some have pointed out creations and designers such as Christian Dior, Iris Van Herpen, Gianfranco Ferré, and Alexander McQueen.
Just FYI, some of the comments are hilarious and especially witty so let’s lend a hand to them!
Some people are also speculating that this theme has been indirectly inspired by Kim Kardashian’s last Met Gala dress. And though the dress code for the event has not yet been announced, we’re looking forward to seeing the innovative designs and outfits the guests will wear.
Jokes aside, I hope to see the coming Met Gala full of guests wearing rich and beautiful gowns and/or outfits. Let it be the year of beautiful Met outfits, please!
