Tone Deaf But Make It Grand: Here’s Everything You Need To Know About The Met Gala 2022 Theme
From the Oscars to the Grammys, the 2022 red carpet scene has proved to be epic so far. However, we will restrain from giving it a full-fledged thumbs up unless we witness the biggest fashion event of the year—the Met Gala 2022 red carpet. It is a matter of just a few hours before the who’s who of the fashion world tread the coveted red carpet and make it a night to remember.
However, if you find it hard to contain your excitement, we have got just what you need. We have decided to take you through this year’s theme to keep your fashion crazed souls pacified. Here’s everything that you need to know about the 2022 Met Gala’s red carpet theme.
All You Need To Know About The 2022 Red Carpet Theme
An extension of last year’s benefit, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” this year’s VIP party at the Met has been titled “In America: An Anthology of Fashion.” The star-spangled styles last year highlighted what it means to be a fashion connoisseur in America. This year, the stakes are high as the attendees have been tasked to dissect the anatomy of American fashion and lay bare its roots.
All Things Grand
Unlike last year, there is a concrete theme this year titled ‘Gilded Glamour.’ It references the Gilded Age in the US which was a time of opulence and over the top glamour. The era roughly extended from 1870 to 1900 and is said to have greatly influenced fashion, haute couture, and red carpet costumes as we know them today. When it came to grandeur, the fashionistas back in the day adopted a no holds barred approach.
Think elaborate costumes, monobosom silhouettes, princess line dresses, and bustle (fuller in the back) gowns. When it comes to the colour palette, we anticipate an array of vibrant hues with a peppering of pristine ivory. In terms of details, we envision metallic trims, browns, laces, frills, and even feathers. Plus, we do expect some out of box Asian fits complete with iris motifs as well as some shirtwaist ensembles from the more daring divas. Oh, and there is no forgetting the corsets.
Remember, the 2018 Met Gala with its ‘Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination’ theme? Well, if the fashion gworls play it right, we expect even more drama!
Tone Deaf Much?
Of all things that fashion has accused to be, irrelevant should not be one of them. History is proof that art moves the world and the Met Gala red carpet would have been a great means to help everyone with a reminder. Sadly, the opposite seems to be happening at the moment. Bad joke but are we trying to take inspiration from the 2021 Met Gala Kim K by turning a blind eye to everything that is happening around us? As world experts fear that the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war might spill over borders, we could have used a more sombre theme. In a pandemic-infested world, the Gilded Age is not the era on our minds. With economic experts foreseeing a recession, the Great Depression comes dangerously close though.
Invoking grandeur and recollecting a time of economic boom when the world is literally set on fire? Yup, that’s what seems to be happening with this year’s Met Gala red carpet and we better take it with a pinch of salt.
Remember Cara Delevingne’s ‘Peg The Patriarchy’ bulletproof vest? We wish to see similar looks but “grander” of course. We are investing our hopes in fashion revolutionaries who embrace the theme with a sense of irony and dare to make a fitting statement. What about you?
