This 24-year-old Influencer Is Bringing Body Positivity And Self-love On Our Feeds, One Song At A Time
The body positive movement is one of the best things to infiltrate social media and we are here for it. On a platform like Instagram that continues to shelter diet culture and trolls, it is heartwarming to see content creators pushing the envelope with their art. Recently, we stumbled upon body positivity anthems created by singer and Insta star Vipasha Malhotra and she nailed it!
Vipasha has created two immensely special tracks on body positivity. We spoke to the 24-year-old singer about her journey and she wasn’t afraid to spill the tea!
“I Don’t Introduce Myself As A Fat Person”
When we asked Vipasha about her inspiration behind the tracks—Khud Mein Khoobsoorat and Parody of Kasoor, she got real about her journey. The content creator said, “Whenever I introduce myself, there are many things I tell people—sometimes I say I am a musician, sometimes I call myself a comic, sometimes I talk about my hobbies. But there is one thing that never comes to my mind when I am introducing myself to people, yet it seems to be the first thing they notice about me that I am fat. I never made this word a part of my identity but everyone kept associating this word with me and over time this word became a part of my identity.”
Vipasha added, “I have always thought of myself as a content creator, not someone who has a message about body positivity. I feel that my existence itself is a body-positive movement because I did not realise this was such a brave move for others. Whenever I would post my content I would think that it is completely normal. I know what my body looks like and it is normal. But when everyone keeps saying, ‘wow you are so courageous’, ‘you are so brave for being yourself on social media’ and ‘you are so brave for existing as a fat person’. That’s how I got into body positivity content creation.”
Dear Trolls, We Aren’t Going To Cover Up
One can’t talk about Instagram without talking about the trolls, when you are an influencer or a public figure your every move gets noticed, so how does Vipasha deal with it? The singer responded, “There have been times when I was just doing a fashion haul and people would comment that ‘you are so fat and that’s why clothes don’t fit you’. People are just grossed out by the fact that I am fat. At the moment I thought, ‘I am just fat’ that’s just one characteristic and it has nothing to do with my work. The track Mai Moti Hoon was about that. I am not going to tolerate all this (trolling) and am just going to ignore you and block you (trolls).”
“I just feel like you know recently fat people are embracing themselves and a lot of us started wearing crop tops and other things. People are finally coming to terms with the fact that just because we are fat doesn’t mean we have to deny fashion and being fat doesn’t mean we need to cover up you know we can exist like everyone else,” concluded Vipasha.
We totally agree with Vipasha here! Body positivity is so much more than a movement and bodies should be celebrated in their natural glory. It is about time that we make social media a kinder place and let go of our own judgement!
