“A boxer, a mother of three boys. Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha. Arjuna, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Padma Shri, Padma Bhusan Awardee. 2012 London Olympic Bronze medalist”, it’s time Mary Kom adds, ‘2018 Commonwealth Games Gold medalist’ to her Twitter bio.
The five-time world champion, Mary Kom didn’t just win a gold in boxing at the 2018 Games but has become the first Indian woman boxer to have done so.
After the remarkable (read, golden) victory of Mirabai Chanu, Sanjita Chanu and Manika Batra (go, #GirlPower!) in the Commonwealth Games of 2018, Mary Kom has given us another reason to smile. The 35-year-old boxer from Manipur achieved the accolade after defeating Northern Ireland’s Kristina O’Hara in the 45-48kg category final on Saturday. #PunchMeinHaiDum and rightly so, don’t you think?
Congratulations Mary Kom, we couldn’t be prouder.
