Mary Kom, the six-time world champion has done it once again! Mary Kom and 24-year-old Simranjit Kaur, the 2018 World Championships bronze winner, bought home gold at the 23rd President’s Cup which was held in Labuan Bajo, Indonesia. Mary Kom won the gold in the 54kg category and Simranjit Kaur bagged her win in the 60kg category at the event. The women pugilists brought home all the four medals that were up for grabs. Mary Kom, the 36-year-old mother of three shared the joy of this win on her Twitter account with a video from the ceremony.
Mary Kom won the gold by beating Australia’s April Franks 5-0 and Simranjit Kaur beat Indonesia’s Hasanah Huswatun 5-0, securing the winning title for the Indian team. The men’s Indian team also won two silver and three gold medals through the rounds. Overall, this outstanding performance won the group the ‘Best Team’ award.
Mary Kom seems to be on a spree since her win at the Indian Open held in May! Kickstarting her preparation for the World Championships which will be held from September 7th to 21st, the pugilist is ready to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
