Malaika Arora’s mornings are hydrating. Arora drinks about one liter of water, aka 5 glasses of water, right after waking up. This, she does, before Pranayama and skincare, and for a reason. The model-cum-actress calls this ‘water therapy’ and claims that it’s especially beneficial for the skin.
But how does it help the skin and where do you begin? I’ve done some digging around and found some answers.
What Does It Mean For The Skin?
An obvious, fundamental tenet of skincare? Hydration. Simply consuming enough water hydrates you from the inside out and imparts a glow to your face. Consuming water replenishes all the moisture your skin has lost via evaporation, and thus, prevents dehydration and irritation. This also repairs your skin’s barrier and restores the healthy functioning of your skin.
Your skin holds about 30% of your body’s water. The more the water, the plumper, thicker, and denser your skin. But you need to maintain this percentage or your skin will lose elasticity and density quickly; looking thin, puffy, and aged in no time. This is exactly how a lack of water can lead to the development of premature signs of ageing.
This amount of water can balance the pH levels of the skin and reduce the occurrence of acne, sensitivity, and more. Not just pH but it can also control oil production; preventing frequent acne.
Your kidneys, too, need a large amount of water to detox and flush all those toxins right out of your bloodstream. A toxin-free bloodstream supplies more oxygen and nutrients to the skin; making it look even and glowy.
This means that drinking water first thing in the morning enhances superficial and deeper hydration levels of the skin.
Here’s How You Need To Do It
- You can begin with 3-4 glasses of water; eventually working your way up to 7 glasses.
- Do this on an empty stomach before brushing. Lukewarm water is advisable. You can infuse it with lemon for some flavour.
- Avoid eating anything for 45 minutes after.
- Indulge in light activities like yoga or walking during this time.
- Try maintaining a gap of 2 hours between every meal you consume throughout the day.
- Do not go over 6 or 7 glasses. Excess water is not the best for your system either.
- Avoid caffeinated beverages and alcohol to see results.
That’s it. Start slow if you find this excessive. But you’ll get there soon enough.
