Not Sobhita Or Kalki, Mona Singh As Bulbbul Johari Is The Performance You Need To See In MIH 2
In a world where marriage is supposed to be the end of a love story, Zoya Akhtar’s Made In Heaven simply holds a mirror. The thundering success of season 1 and the four-year wait for the next one, season 2 already had a lot of expectations to begin with. With the arrival of a new face in Karan Mehra (Arjun Mathur) and Tara Khanna’s (Sobhita Dhulipala) wedding planning team, everyone was skeptical. But Bulbbul Johari, played by Mona Singh fits the cast like a glove.
This season, MIH has thrown light on colourism, caste prejudice, polygamy and domestic violence and Bulbbul is the one taking everything head on. It is hard to accept a new face in a well-loved show, but she shows how it is done. Unlike Tara and Karan, she isn’t afraid of speaking up even when it means crossing a line.
Take A Bow, Bulbbul
The moment she shone the brightest was in MIH’s second episode Beauty and the beast. Spoiler alert! The episode features the tragic tale of Adhira, an actress to be wedded, who is willing to turn a blind eye to anything. While everyone keeps mum on telltale marks of physical abuse, Bulbbul speaks up. The courage that it takes to speak up in a business where client is everything, it is not for everyone. And that courage comes to her through her own story. Well, not revealing it all here!
Mona as Bulbbul forces the viewers to look past the beautiful image of a couple in love. When a man’s gawking insecurities and possessiveness erases a woman’s sense of self and autonomy, Bulbbul takes the matter in her own hands. Wether she succeeds or not, she does the best possible thing–she doesn’t turn a blind eye. Without uttering a word in a few scenes, she says it all with one glance. The pain on her face speaks volumes of her empathy as a woman who has seen the signs and ignored them. She might not be a superhero, but for me Bulbbul was the one with the spine of steel.
Made In Heaven season 2 is a rich tapestry of human emotions and the adding of Bulbbul takes the cake. You can binge the show on Amazon Prime.
