British luxury label, Stella McCartney has been instrumental in the waving the flag for cruelty-free fashion by boycotting fur and leather in 2009. With brands like Armani following suit over the years. More recently, in October, Gucci decided to go fur-free for Spring 2018 and after. The Italian fashion house’s president and CEO Marco Bizzarri announced and committed that the fashion house’s remaining animal fur designs will be held for a charity auction and the proceeds will go to the animal rights organisations Humane Society International and LAV.
Following in the footsteps of Gucci, Michael Kors and Jimmy Choo have officially added their names to the list of fur-free luxury brands, as per the reports of WWD. The Executive Chief Officer for Michael Kors, John Idol confirmed to the outlet that the brand will not include any fur products in the collections by December 2018 and said that this “marks a new chapter as our company continues to evolve its use of innovative materials.”
Michael Kors had recently acquired Jimmy Choo and the brand confirmed that the British footwear and accessories brand will also be a part of this fur-free commitment. According to BOF, Michael Kors will showcase their new non-animal “fur” techniques in their upcoming runway show in February.
For the American luxury brand, this decision comes after multiple protests from animal rights activists, including PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). Earlier this year, in June, Michael Kors’ live interview at the Metropolitan Museum of Art was interrupted by activists chanting slogans such as “Michael Kors has blood on his hands,” and others played audios of animals shrieking. PETA officials have also reported that they met with Kors’ staffers in hopes of convincing them to go fur-free.
The declaration has certainly is a good news for many, including animal rights activists. As Wayne Pacelle, the CEO of The Humane Society of the United States said, “With the advances in faux fur and the introduction of other innovative materials, it’s becoming clear that there is simply no reason to continue using a product that causes so much pain and suffering.”
With the decision coming along, it’s safe to say that people expected Michael Kors to go fur-free as the brand is dear to many, in fact, it is one of the most bought fashion luxury brands in India. Afterall, we remember those Access smartwatches and funky flip-flops from the Spring 2018 runway. Can you wait for fur-free Michael Kors’ bags? No, right? Neither can we! So here are some faux fur bags you can invest in for now!
