Konkona Sen, Bhumi Pednekar Take On The Patriarchy In Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare
That Bollywood is sexist is a fact (not so) universally acknowledged, and the treatment of women, be it on or off-screen, has always been stereotypical. Since the very beginning, women’s roles were mostly limited to playing the ‘love interest’ or the ‘maa’ of the hero. Women actors are most often the ‘second lead’ and if a movie is ever helmed by women, people act like it is revolutionary.
However, with the emergence of more female directors over the years, real stories about real women are being brought to life on screen. One such movie was Lipstick Under My Burkha, a 2016 film about four Indian women who claim their independence through small acts of courage. Now, director Alankrita Shrivastava is back with another film, Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare, and we can’t wait for it to hit our laptop screens.

The star-studded cast includes Konkona Sen Sharma, who’s last major film was also Lipstick Under My Burkha, as well as Bhumi Pednekar. The two stellar actors will be playing on-screen cousins in this film, who are both trying to take on the patriarchy in their own ways, one day at a time.
Check out the trailer of the movie:
The character of Dolly will be portrayed by Konkona, a married woman who is in a relationship with a much younger man. Bhumi, on the other hand, plays Kajal, and works at a phone-sex company.
Besides these two, the film also stars other critically acclaimed actors including Vikrant Massey, Amol Parashar, Kubra Sait, Aamir Bashir, and Mushtaq Khan. The film is geared up for a September 18 release on Netflix, and we’re counting down the days.
We’ve all been getting a little more (okay a lot more) screen time thanks to the pandemic, and finishing a good show/movie can truly leave us feeling empty. Thankfully, Netflix is the gift that keeps on giving.
So bookmark your calendars for September 18, and in the meantime, go re-watch Lipstick Under My Burkha.
