Kangana Ranaut’s Dhaakad is scheduled release on May 20 and she is busy promoting her film all of this week. You know what that means, right? Gear up for a lot of unfiltered interviews and opinions on the film industry. In fact, it has already started.
We all know that Kangana loves to talk about star kids and she does not miss an opportunity to target them during media interactions. Something similar happened yesterday during an interview when the actress was asked the reason behind South Indian films doing better than Bollywood productions lately. Kangana started her answer by giving the credit to the connection that South Indian actors share with their audience. And then, she ended up talking about B-town star kids. Scroll down to read the details:
She said, “The way they have a connect with their audience, it is very strong. I wouldn’t say fans, it’s much more than that. With us what happens is that their (stars’) kids go abroad to complete their studies. They talk in English, watch only Hollywood films. They eat only with knives and forks and talk differently. So, how will they connect? Dekhne me bhi ajeeb se aise lagte hai jaise uble hue ande (They even look weird like boiled eggs). Their entire look has changed so people cannot relate. I don’t mean to troll anyone.”
Kangana did not stop just there and added, “Look how Pushpa looks like someone we know. Every labourer is able to connect with him. Tell me which of our heroes can look like a labourer in today’s times? They cannot. So, their culture (of South Indian film industry) and their grounded nature is paying them off. I hope they don’t start taking inspiration from the West. It’s important to stay connected to people within your country.”
Ummm….Kangana needs to do a fact check here. To begin with, most of these stars that she appreciates every now and then belong to big film families including her favourite Allu Arjun. The clan culture is as strong in the South Indian film industry as it is in Bollywood. Also, so many of these star kids have been to foreign universities including the very popular Dulquer Salmaan. Oh and Allu Arjun aka Pushpa does not look like a labourer. It was all makeup. For someone who has been into acting for so long, we thought Kangana would understand that much. Saying something like “Tell me which of our heroes can look like a labourer in today’s times,” is as ill-formed as it is problematic.
But most importantly, is Kangana sure that she didn’t mean to troll anyone? It’s a tall claim after you literally comment on people’s looks and call them “ubla anda.” Sounds a lot like trolling to us honestly. It is high time the actress realises that there is a thin line between ‘sharing your honest opinions’ and bringing someone down.
Here’s hoping that Kangana does her research before sharing “expert” comments in the next interview.
