How many of us love the idea of having a glass of whiskey on the rocks; but, are constantly shunned away because ‘girls don’t drink whiskey’ or some generic sexist version of that? Too many of us, right? We know all too well about how often whiskey has been deemed as a “gentleman’s drink”. Where does that leave all the women who prefer it as their choice of alcohol?
Luckily, we’ve got some good news for you, ladies. There is officially a Jane Walker whiskey and it comes with a lady on the label. Not only does she look amazing; but, the fact that they haven’t changed the aesthetics of the brand is exactly the kind of equality in imaging that we should promote.
After 200 years of showcasing Johnnie Walker as their mascot, the brand is finally ready to make a change towards progress. Stephanie Jacoby, the company’s Vice President said to a leading magazine, “Scotch, as a category is seen as particularly intimidating by women. It’s a really exciting opportunity to invite women into the brand. We are proud to toast the many achievements of women and everyone on the journey towards progress in gender equality. Important conversations about gender continue to be at the forefront of culture and we strongly believe there is no better time than now to introduce our Jane Walker icon and contribute to pioneering organizations that share our mission.”
The whiskey label that is set to launch sometime in March, as an ode to women on International Women’s Day, is a great step in the direction towards gender equality across all parameters. This includes an area that is fairly less spoken about – alcohol. So, while most men won’t stop with all the sexist comments and statements that every whiskey-drinking woman is – more often than not – subject to, we’ll just have a glass of that Jane Walker, please!
