Well, it seems like Diet Sabya, the anonymous Instagram account that bluntly shames designers for copying others’ work, has become controversy’s favourite child lately. The sharp-tongued Insta account has once again found itself in the middle of a strong controversy, and this time too for all the wrong reasons!
Diet Sabya and @hhcguiltfree called out jewellery label Misho Designs, for plagiarising designs from French-based luxury brand Celine. Here’s what happened: Diet Sabya spotted a pair of Misho textured hoop earrings on Etsy that was heavily inspired by a “Vintage Celine” design. The fashion critic posted pictures comparing the two designs and the stark similarity between them. However, things turned south when Misho Designs pointed out that the snark was miscredited and totally uncalled for. The “Celine” earrings was actually some $13 knock-off of Misho’s original design.
And the worst part? The label had earlier reached out to Diet Sabya with the same probelm–that other designers were selling knock-offs of their designs. Not only did the account acknowledge them, but also called the earrings ‘a good desgin’. Misho also scared screenshots of the same:
Misho has now demanded a public apology from Diet Sabya for its glorified bullying, and has threatened to take them to court. Several designers and celebrities, including actor Sonam Kapoor, stylist Tanya Ghavri and comedian Mallika Dua have come out in support of Misho Designs, and asked Diet Sabya to issue an apology.
Talking about the fiasco and the overwhelming responses that Misho recieved on the internet, Suhani Parekh, the Creative Director of the company said, “So so overwhelmed by the incredible support we’ve seen from friends, our Instagram family and misho patrons. Honestly apology or not – just the fact that people have come out with so much love and support for a young designer is so touching.”
We also tried to reach out to Diet Sabya and @hhcguiltfree for a comment but at the time of publishing, neither of them had responded to our questions.
This is not the first time that Diet Sabya has been catty without doing it’s fair share of research first. Remember how Sonam Kapoor and sister Rhea Kapoor had to come out in support of designer Anamika Khanna after Diet Sabya wrongly called her AK-OK concept on a lehenga “too close” to the one seen in US Vogue 2018?
