Good news is in store for Indian cricket fans as the women’s cricket team just advanced to the finals of the T20 Cricket World Cup. Our team has made history because this is the first time the Indian women’s cricket team has ever made it to the final round of the highly-competitive tournament, and we are so proud!
After rain washed out the semi-final clash against England in Sydney, the team made it to the finals. The Indian team qualified for the final on the basis of a higher position in the points table–India and South Africa are the only two teams who have not lost a single match in the tournament up to this point. The English team didn’t make it because there were no reserve days for the knockout battle, so they will be returning home.
What’s next for India’s women in blue? They are all set to play the winner of the match between South Africa and Australia in the final match of the series, which will decide which country get to take home the coveted T20 World Cup Trophy.
The captain of the Indian men’s team, Virat Kohli, took to Twitter to congratulate the women’s team lead by captain Harmanpreet Kaur. Here’s what he said:
We are thrilled that our women’s cricket team has achieved this historical feat–given that women in India aren’t given even half as much as the recognition their male counterparts get. Our team has proven that they are true champions and we are rooting for them to bring back the trophy!
