Indian Matchmaking Is Returning With A New Season & We Aren’t Sure How We Feel About It
Last year, I was in for a rude shock as soon as I started streaming Indian Matchmaking. ‘Shaadi and shiz, what’s not to like?’ was the thought when I started watching the show. However, 10 minutes into the first episode and I knew that it was going to be one of those cringy shows which are so bad that they are good. I was right. Amid immature Indian men, scary MILs, and highly problematic rishta aunties, it was hard to tell what did I hate the most. Come July 2021 and I had my answer. The show scored a nomination at the 73rd Emmy Awards under the ‘Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program’ category and well, I definitely hated that the most. Why on Earth this show that was promoting all things problematic was being appreciated so much? ‘It can’t get worse’ I thought and the universe definitely took that as a challenge.
Long things short–Indian Matchmaking has been renewed by Netflix and Sima Tamaria aka ‘Sima aunty from Mumbai’ is all set to return for the new season. We have a lot of feelings about this. So, here’s the thing–we are definitely going to watch it because it is kinda therapeutic to watch these problematic rishta aunties and ladkawalas under the limelight. They are open to scrutiny and scrutinise we must. However, we are also worried about all the women who have signed up to be a part of this shit show this time. The last time we watched the show, an independent woman was labeled “uncompromising” and “stubborn” and another one was looked down upon for her age and looks.
We aren’t too sure if we have it in us to watch quiet, docile girls being hailed as the epitome of womanhood and the perfect “wife material” while any woman with even a smudge of opinion is instantly disapproved and rejected. And yet, we are going to watch it. ‘Coz someone has to call out the bullshit when a bunch of men-children takes to screen acting all entitled and bratty, right? Actually, that is the part we look forward to. Well, we have made peace with the fact that Indian Matchmaking season 2 would start streaming on Netflix soon. And truth be told, we can’t wait to hate-watch it.
