According to the poll of global experts, India has now been declared as the world’s most dangerous country for women. After all the recent registered rape cases, we can say that we did see this coming.
On Tuesday, a list was released that stated that India is dangerous for women due to the high risk of sexual violence, human trafficking, domestic servitude, forced marriages, female infanticide and forced slave labour.
Afghanistan and Syria, which are war-torn countries, ranked second and third, followed by Somalia and Saudi Arabia in the Thomson Reuters Foundation survey of about 550 experts on women’s issues. The United States was the only western country to make it to the top 10. It was ranked third in the list as well (alongside Syria).
When a similar survey was done in 2011, the experts found Afghanistan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Pakistan, India and Somalia to be the most dangerous countries for women. The rate of violence against women has certainly increased in our country since then.
The experts believe the rising rate suggests that not enough is being done to protect women. Since Nirbhaya, instead of fearing the government, criminals are challenging the government.
A Karnataka government official, Manjunath Gangadhara said, “India has shown utter disregard and disrespect for women… rape, marital rapes, sexual assault and harassment, female infanticide has gone unabated.”
As per the government data as well, the crime against women has increased by 83 percent between 2007 to 2016. At a point, four rape cases were being reported every hour. However, India’s Ministry of Women and Child Development has refused to comment on the survey results.
Mera Bharat really Mahan? It’s a good day to be a woman in this country, don’t you think? (Sarcasm Alert)
