Tell us a bit about Gulabo Jaipur and how it came about?
Gulabo Jaipur is a brand inspired by the Pink City itself. It all started back in 2014. I’ve always had flair for clothes and fashion. I loved telling people what to wear and what not, how to style their outfits. It all began with a small exhibition and Gulabo Jaipur, as we know it today, came to be.
What is your latest collection about and what can customers expect from it?
Our new collection is full of bright colors and details. Fabrics like cotton and modal are the choices for this season. Our clients are in for a lovely summer wardrobe update!
A lot of celebrities have worn outfits from your label. Is there one among those outfits that has turned out to be a bestseller?
All the looks that celebrities wear from Gulabo Jaipur end up becoming our top sellers, but one that topped the charts like crazy was the Red Sufi Anarkali worn by Karisma Kapoor.
How important or unimportant do you feel trends are when designing for an Indian audience?
I don’t really believe in trends. As a clothing brand, we intend to design garments that are supremely evergreen or sadabahaar like it is often said. The idea is to wear them again and again, no matter what the occasion.
What, according to you, is the best way to style relaxed silhouettes and prints?
Comfortable clothing is what we always strive for. It is important to keep the outfit simple and subtle and yet tending to the occasion at hand. One can always play around with all kinds of prints, the mistakes just might be in not knowing which kind of fabric to use and what colours to wear.
What are the best ways to incorporate prints into festive wear?
In terms of winter attire, it would be matching a jacket with the outfit you have picked or probably adding a vibrant stole to round up your look.
An occasion-centric attire that never goes out of style?
An anarkali! One of our top sellers is anarkali with chikankari. It’s apt for all events, so I would say that an Indian wear outfit is one of the best styles to add to your wardrobe.
A fad you think should be left behind?
Fast fashion. Too many brands are just launching too many things and that is something we ought to stop doing.
A celebrity you are looking forward to seeing in your designs this year?
There are actually two: Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt!
A famous personality whose style you admire?
Michelle Obama; she has the most impeccable style.
