If you’ve grown up consuming Bollywood movies as much as I did, you’d recall there have been times when filmmakers graced their lead actresses with outfits that looked straight from heaven. No, I’m not exactly talking about Deepika Padukone’s saree from YJHD, which was gorgeous too, in my opinion. But here, I’m going even further back, referring to celestial sarees and lehengas that made a naive part of me almost want to become an actor growing up.
To put things into context – I’m a zillenial, a cusp Gen Z who relates with a lot of millennial experiences, thanks to her big sister. Like all my peers back then, there was something about costumes in Bollywood films that often left me spellbound. Here are 12 outfits I wished to own back then –
1. Poo’s ‘Bole Chudiyan’ lehenga in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham
2. Rani Mukerjee’s blue lehenga with mirrorwork in ‘Dhadak Dhadak‘ song from Bunty Aur Babli
3. Aishwarya Rai’s lavender lehenga in ‘Chand Chupa Badal Mein’ from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam
4. Priyanka Chopra’s ‘Desi Girl‘ saree in Dostana
5. Aishwarya Rai’s blue lehenga from Dil Ka Rishta
There’s something about this woman which is unearthly.
6. Sushmita Sen’s complete wardrobe of sarees from Main Hoon Na
Yes, the complete wardrobe. There’s nothing I’d like to miss out on.
7. Raveena Tandon’s yellow saree in Tip Tip Barsa Paani from Mohra
8. Sridevi’s iconic blue saree in ‘Kaate Nahin Kat Te‘ from Mr. India
9. Katrina Kaif’s sarees in ‘Teri Ore‘ from Singh Is Kinng
10. Karishma Kapoor’s velveteen dress from Dil Toh Pagal Hai
11. Preity Zinta’s blue ‘Maahi Ve‘ lehenga from Kal Ho Naa Ho
12. Literally all outfits Aishwarya Rai & Madhuri Dixit wore in Devdas
To be honest, I still wouldn’t mind adding some of them to my ‘wedding guest’ wardrobe. Whenever, if ever, that happens.
