How To Remove Holi Colours From Skin And Hair

Holi is one of my favourite festivals and I cannot contain my excitement. I remember spending much of my day soaking in the sun after having played with colours for hours. That’s every year’s story. I also know what a horror it is to return home with a rainbow-coloured face and body after hours of the colours basking on my skin comfortably.  All while my friends and I listen to the best Holi songs and play Holi games and holi quizzes.

But over the years, I have learned how to clean my skin, hair, and nails of the smallest stain with some no-effort tricks and hacks. Ahead — you’ll learn how to remove holi colour from face, skin, hair, and nails.

How To Remove Holi Colour From The Face

I’m sure you don’t want to turn up at work with a face full of colour the next day. No one does. So here’s how to remove permanent holi colour from face.

  1. Massage your face with some (coconut) oil pre-cleansing. This will melt all the colours, making it easier for the cleanser to wash it off.
  2. Don’t wash your face with warm or hot water. The higher the temperature, the more difficult it’ll be to remove those stains. It will solidify the stains and can even irritate your skin more.
  3. If your skin feels itchy, spritz some rosewater and glycerin to soothe and cool the face.
  4. If your skin is oily, a Multani Mitti pack can help. It’ll help scrub off all that colour along with any oiliness.
  5. Rub some wedges of lemon over spots of your skin that are stained with colour. Since lemon excels at bleaching, it can fade stains naturally.

How To Remove Holi Colour From The Skin

You might have removed all those stains from your face. But what about the rest of the body? Here’s how to remove holi colour from the skin.

  1. Rub some lemon over areas that are stained. Leave it on for 15 minutes before rinsing it off.
  2. Mix some curd with besan and layer the paste onto your body for about 30 minutes.
  3. Make sure you’re moisturising your body with lots of lotion right after your shower.
  4. Use a gentle, non-irritating soap to clean your body.
  5. You can apply some soaked amchur powder to your neck to remove any stains. But this is only for those of you who have oily or greasy skin as this remedy can dry your skin out.

How To Remove Holi Colour From The Hair

Removing colour from your hair is the goal, but doing it while moisturising your hair is important.

  1. Apply the yolk of an egg to your scalp before stepping into the shower. Leave it in for about 30 minutes before rinsing it off thoroughly. This undoes all that damage from the colour while moisturising your strands and scalp.
  2. You can even replace the egg with some curd and fenugreek (methi) seeds. Curd will reduce roughness and frizz from the colours. Fenugreek moisturises and conditions the hair thoroughly.
  3. Or mix a tablespoon of lemon (juice) with some curd and apply it to the mane. Lemon will clear all that dirt and build-up on the scalp and strands effectively.
  4. You must condition your hair with an ultra-hydrating conditioner post-shampooing to restore your hair’s lustre and softness.
  5. Oil your hair regularly after Holi.

How To Remove Holi Colour From The Nails

If your nails are stained with colour, you might want to act fast. Like, really fast. This is what I do to restore my nails to their O.G healthy-looking avatar.

  1. Soak your fingers in a bowl of cold/cool water. Make sure it’s not warm. The warmer the water, the more the colour will latch onto your nails.
  2. Squeeze some juice from a lemon into a bowl. Soak your fingers in it for 10 minutes.
  3. You can even soak your nails in vinegar instead of lemon. Since it’s citric in nature, it will remove those stains easily.
  4. Keep massaging almond oil onto the nails over the next couple of days. This will slowly fade those stains.

How To Remove Holi Colour From The Hands

  1. First things first — layer your hands with some Vaseline before stepping out. It’ll create a layer on top of your skin and prevent colours from staining your hands.
  2. Soak your hands in a bowl of lemon juice. This will not just remove stains from the nails but from your fingers and hands too.
  3. Immediately after, wash your hands with a gentle soap to remove all the build-up.
  4. Moisturise your skin after, to prevent dryness and irritation.
  5. Do not scrub the hands too much as this can lead to inflammation and itching.

And that’s how to get rid of holi colours. I promise these are going to save your face, skin, nails, and hair. Thank me later!
