Glossy and glamorous, Gatsby waves are one of those hair trends that is popular amongst celebs when it’s time to get ready for the red carpet. Inspired by the 1920s era, this hairstyle is unlike any other wavy mane we are accustomed to. The texture is dramatically pronounced and neat AF. It almost seems like only a pro hair artist can get a mane to look so glorious. That notion is not entirely.
When this hairstyle made a comeback, stylists came up with different methods to ace the trend, and one of those methods included using just a flat iron. Sounds crazy, doesn’t it? Here, we are still struggling to get decent, non-crumpled, wave patterns with a straightener, and the hair pros are creating a magical uniform texture across the mane without hesitation. Admittedly, even professionals sometimes find Gatsby waves to be tricky. However, thankfully, there are a number of other ways to get similar results.
Take a look at how the pros go about recreating the trend with a flat iron and check out some alternative methods that are beginner-friendly and work just as well.
How The Pros Ace The Gatsby Waves
This is why your hairstylist can’t explain to you exactly how to recreate Gatsby waves; it isn’t all that easy to teach. You need to twist the straightener multiple times depending on your hair length in order to get the desired wavy effect.
In this video, you can see how the hair is first smoothened out, so if you don’t already have naturally straight hair, you should first begin with a hair wash and smooth blowout. On a smooth mane, the hair is sectioned off and the stylist runs a flat iron straight from above the root and then twists her wrist while clamping the hair so as to encourage a wave. She does this at intervals along the entire hair length and repeats it systematically on every section. What isn’t shown in the video is that once you’ve completed one stretch, you need to spritz it with hairspray so that it stays in shape. The final touch is to swipe a brush once along the lengths to get it all together.
Beginner-Friendly Ways To Create The ‘Do
Can we all agree that using a hair straightener seems too difficult? I mean, come on, we can’t possibly even know if we are getting it right considering we will be performing it on ourselves and don’t have eyes at the back of our heads. That being said, here are some easier ways to get those glamarous locks.
Method 1: Curl Power
You can always use a large barrel tong to curl your hair and then brush it out to form loose waves. This will get you almost uniform waves that are beautifully blended together and coiled at the ends. This works because it looks a tad bit more natural but equally stunning.
Method 2: The Braid-y Bunch
Section your hair in half with a deep side parting at the front and create two braids. Take a flat iron and clamp it along the lengths of the braids. Now, untie those braids and you will get that gorgeous wavy texture that could even fool a pro. Spritz on hairspray and run a brush along your lengths.
Method 3: Double Down
Thanks to product innovations, you can get a large double-barrel tong to get the job done with ease. Begin on smoothly blow-dried hair. Simply section your locks and use the tool on your lengths. You might have to do two to three presses in descending order if you have long hair. One press should suffice if you have short hair. With this method, you don’t even need to brush out your locks at the end. Simply set it with hairspray and you are good to go.
