Nothing changes your mood like your favourite playlist running on loop, until you’re humming it all day long just from memory, does it? Quoting Rihanna, ‘Please don’t stop the music!’.
If you’re obsessed with your current playlist, I think it’s time to take your love for music to the next level – let your jams take over your closet! Yes, I’m talking about the mood of your favourite numbers inspiring your OOTDs. And if you’re looking for a sartorial change-up, this just might be the most fun and interesting way to do it. Here’s a bunch of the season’s chart topping songs (English and Hindi, because we know how you love a mix), and how you can dress for each one of them:
1. Swag Se Swagat – Tiger Zinda Hai
So, I’m 5 seconds into this song, and I’m hooked. Can you blame me, really? It’s not just how good Katrina looks in the video, the catchy lyrics or the foot tapping tempo – it’s how you feel while listening to it. Full of ‘swag’, TBH. And what’s the most ‘swag’ thing ever? A pair of statement black sunnies, of course. If you have this tune in your playlist, you NEED black tints in your wardrobe. Put on a pair of these bad boys and watch any basic look transform into magic. Tip: Wear them with a choker, a basic tee, denim cut-offs and black chunky boots for maximum Kat impact.
POPxo recommends: Steampunk Sunnies – Black (Rs 1,665) by Cupiditee
2. Havana by Camila Cabello
If you’ve never been to Cuba, the saxophone notes paint you a clear enough picture. Swaying palm trees, cruising in pastel-hued vintage cars and dingy dancing joints that take you back to the 50s; Cabello’s song makes you want to pin a red rose in your hair and do the Mambo with a complete stranger (a very, very handsome stanger) all night! All you need to recreate the ‘Havana ooh na na’ mood for your next night out = a red fit-and-flare dress and some latin style strappy heels. Accessorise with some classic hoops and a cute evening clutch.
POPxo recommends: Off-The-Shoulder Jersey Dress (Rs 1,299) by Forever21
3. Pallo Latke – Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana
Obsession level: I want to get married just so I can dress up and dance to this Bollywood shaadi rhythm. I bet every playlist has that one song that, as soon as it comes on, all you want to do is dance your pallo-off at a wedding. This modern remake of a well-known Rajasthani folk song also happens to star my latest Bollywood fave, Rajkummar Rao. Hence, the on-loop playing of it on my ride to work, back home and while taking a shower. If you love this wedding jam as much as I do, your next sangeet night appearance should feature a quirky saree. It should be one that, like the song, is super fun and traditional with a twist. You can add some popping jhumkas, statement bangles and juttis for dancing comfort.

4. Perfect by Ed Sheeran
Let’s slow it down a bit, shall we? This is ‘coz I’m as much of a hopeless romantic, as I am a maniac on the dance floor. So naturally, Ed Sheeran is the owner of my heart and soul when it comes to sappy love songs. “I don’t deserve it… Darling, you look perfect tonight”. This is exactly how bae should feel when he looks at what your wearing. The classic ballad-type number calls for a stunning LBD that knocks his socks off. When date night comes around, pair the dress with chandelier earrings, a stack of delicate rings and a pair of strappy heels.
POPxo recommends: Go Glitter Velvet Skater Dress (Rs 3,395) by New Look
5. Mi Gente by J. Balwin, Willy William ft. Beyonce
This spanish club-worthy beat is the perfect example of how the ‘rhythm will get you’ (even if you have to google its lyrics to be able to sing along). Let’s face it, no part of an outfit inspired by any song sung by Bey should be ‘mellow’. It has to be EXTRA. Go all out and club a holographic sequinned mini skirt with a silver crop top, a black clutch bag and patent booties – so that when you’re showing off your best dance moves, all eyes are on you. All. Night. Long.
POPxo recommends: Block Striped Sequin Skirt (Rs 1,216) by Shein
6. Lift Teri Bandh Hai – Judwaa 2
If your playlist has this star-studded song, you know it’s a naughty one. A classic Bollywood pop hit, this number brings out the wild child in you, if you know what I mean. For those of you who don’t already own a pair of thigh high boots, it’s time you get yourself one. They’re THE accessory to make a bold fashion statement in. Plus they fit right in with the sensuous vibe this song has going on. Keep the rest of the look casual ‘cause you know the boots are enough to do the job on their own – a boxy sweatshirt, a pair of basic denim cut-offs and a metallic cuff bracelet is all you need.
POPxo recommends: Pointed Toe Thigh High Stiletto Boots (Rs 2,559) by Romwe
7. Thunder by Imagine Dragons
This is my ‘on my way to work’ jam. Give it a listen and you’ll find the right kind of morning motivation. In addition to blasting this playlist fave, whenever I want to feel like I own my professional and personal life, I throw on the sharpest blazer I can find. And that’s what you should do if you’re suffering from adulting blues too. Pair the blazer with a co-ordinated pair of tailored trousers, pointy patent pumps and a slick AF ponytail. #GirlBoss goals achieved in minutes.
POPxo recommends: Checked Double-Breasted Jacket (Rs 2,990) by Zara
So, put the playlist on shuffle, turn the music up and get your OOTD started. Ready, set, go.
