Why Is Holi Celebrated?
Before we actually get to celebrating the festival, we need to know the significance of Holi. The festival marks the end of the winter season and the beginning of the colourful spring season (quite literally) in our country. Holi is an invocation for a good spring harvest and symbolic of love, forgiveness, happiness, and harmony in life.
How To Celebrate Holi?
From wild Holi parties to fun-filled get togethers at home, there are a variety of ways to make the most of Holi like a tru-blu Hindustani. If your Holi plans aren’t sorted yet and you’re looking for ideas on how to celebrate Holi at home, we’re here for you. Here’s a full-fledged guide on how to enjoy the day indoors.
Lighting The Holika
Holi is a celebration of victory of good over evil rooted in the legend of Prahlad and Holika. The story is about Hiranyakashipu, an ancient king who claimed to be immortal and demanded to be worshiped. However, his own son Prahlad, a great devotee of Lord Vishnu refused to succumb despite the many atrocities inflicted on him. Finally, the king’s sister Holika tricked Prahlad into sitting on a pyre with her in a bid to get rid of him. While she protected herself with a cloak, Prahlad remained exposed. But as the fire blazed, the cloak flew from Holika’s body and encased Prahlad, thus saving his life. This miracle is commemorated on chhoti Holi (a day before Holi) by making the Holi fire. You can light one too and call your friends and family for a hearty bonfire meal!
Preparing For Holi
The next step is to prepare for Holi. For home celebrations, get a whole lot of savoury snacks and traditional desserts like gujiya and ghewar to share with your friends and fam. Keep some dry flowers handy instead of the regular gulaal to prevent staining of your precious furniture, walls, and cutesy kurtas. To be on the safer side, cover your sofas with old bed sheets, slap some coconut oil on your body and hair, and wear clothes you won’t regret dirtying or discarding later. Don’t forget to keep some extra pichkaris, balloons, and dry towels handy for your guests.
Celebrating Holi
Go on, put some colour on your friends and fam, throw water on them, dance on peppy music, and indulge in traditional Holi desserts like gujiya and ghewar. P.S. hot pakodas after a wet Holi celebration can take the fun to a whole new level. If you don’t have the time to make some at home or the means to order, you can always keep ready-to-cook snacks handy, heat them for a few minutes and serve them hot and fresh.
Visiting Friends And Family
A beautiful Holi tradition involves meeting all your friends and family and having a colourful celebration with them. After all, it’s a great day to repair your relationships, celebrate love, and start afresh. You can carry Holi-special desserts if you’re visiting a special one as a token of love. You can also carry some hot snacks to share with them if they live nearby. Additionally, prepare a bag with all your Holi essentials like balloons, coconut oil, water guns, organic colours, and some flower petals, so that you can play Holi with them too.
