How To Brush Your Hair Properly: You Could Be Doing It Wrong!

Priyanka Ghura  |  May 6, 2016

We’ve all heard that theory of a hundred brush strokes to keep your mane healthy, but reality is that, aside from giving you a shoulder ache, it will actually damage your hair and make it frizzier. We’ve already told you about the right brush for you, and now we give you a few simple tips on the how to brush your hair properly – since it is the most basic step of caring for your precious strands! Follow our brushing guide for healthy and glossier hair.

How Often Should You Brush Your Hair?

This mainly depends on the texture of your hair. If you have curly hair then you would know that running a brush through your kinks transforms them into a frizzy mop. The best time to brush your mane and remove all the knots is just before you wash your hair so that it returns to the way you like it after.

For straight to wavy locks, brushing your hair twice a day is advisable – once in the morning and once before you go to bed at night. Don’t spend more than a minute to brush out your locks as over-brushing can lead to hair breakage and fall, but when done the right way brushing can leave your hair healthy, detangled and bring some volume and shine to your strands.

How to Brush Your Hair Correctly!

No, running the brush through your strands anyhow is not what you should be doing. The correct way to brush your hair is:

Step 1: Use a teeny bit of a leave-in conditioner like Bumble and Bumble Leave-in Conditioner or a detangling spray like Matrix Opticare Split End Serum on your mid-length and ends.

Step 2: Divide your hair into two or three sections, depending on how thick it is. Ideally, you can split it down the centre and start with one side before moving on to the next.

Step 3: Use a wide-tooth comb to detangle your ends and mid-lengths before running your brush through your locks all the way.

Step 4: Once you have detangled, brush each side till your hair is smooth. Don’t forget to brush underneath your strands as well as on top.

A Few Don’ts

Don’t Use a Dirty Brush

Oil, sweat and product build-up get easily stuck in-between the bristles of your brush. And let’s not even start on the sheer quantity of strands that you can find lodged in anyone’s hairbrush! We don’t need to tell you twice that using a dirty brush is a complete no-no. Make it a point to clean your brush once or twice a month with a bit of shampoo and warm water.

Don’t Brush Wet Hair

Brushing hair fresh from the shower is one of the most horrible things you could be doing to your mane. Your strands are at their weakest when wet and are the most prone to breakage, so use a wide-tooth comb to detangle when your locks are wet and never a brush.

Don’t Run a Brush Randomly through Your Hair

You may be in a rush to get out the door, but never brush your hair haphazardly in your bid to get ready quickly! Always make sure to detangle from the ends and work upwards, brush out your hair in sections and never run it through your hair randomly and forcefully, as that will definitely cause major hair breakage.

Why You Should Brush Your Hair Regularly

There are many who forget to regularly brush out their strands, while others just prefer the messy hair look. We give you a few advantages of brushing, which tell you why it is an important step in your hair care regime:
