Getting brand new tea on celeb’s lives, witnessing stars manifesting their shaadis, and a lot more drama; it’s almost that time of the year again. Karan Johar is all set to return with the 8th edition of Koffee With Karan, and I’m already dreaming about who the first star on the Koffee couch is going to be. However, amidst all the buzz around KWK, we just came across a blast from the past, where KJo spilled some inside deets on how the guest list for the show is prepared!
Back in 2018, the Dharma filmmaker made an appearance in one of the episodes of Neha Dhupia’s podcast show, No Filter Coffee. In an ‘unfiltered’ conversation, the Chup Chup Ke actress asked KJo to give a glimpse of what the casting room of Koffee With Karan looks like.
After beating around the bush for a while, Karan started by saying, “It’s a harsh reality!” He even shed light on how the process of choosing celebs for the guest list gets utterly brutal and some of the biggest names of tinsel town are considered ‘boring’ and ‘thanda’! He said, “So it’s the entire team of Hotstar and Star World that sit in one room. And if that room was a reality show, I would either have to leave the country or I’d never be welcomed by the film industry. Because the status of where you are in your career is brutally transparent in that room. Like the biggest names in the business are called, ‘Oh they are boring’, ‘That combination is so thanda’, or ‘Nobody wants to see her, she’s given three flops in a row’. And I’m like oh god, if somebody would talk like this about me, I’d die.” Listen to the podcast, here.
Gotta give it to Karan for not just shedding light on the topic, but also showing his dismay about the same!
When KJo Said Bollywood Lacks Conviction
During a round-table interview by Galatta Plus, the filmmaker spoke about how Indian cinema always prefers to go the mundane and mainstream way, without taking a hatke road. He mentioned, “I think the core issue is that we come from a mainstream industry in Hindi cinema, and that includes myself, which does not have one very strong quality that every other cinema on this panel has. That is conviction. We kind of always go with the flow. We had such an original voice in Salim-Javed in the 70s. We created a certain character and the concept of that angsty, angry hero was derived from other cinemas. Then, in the 80s, suddenly something happened and there came a host of remakes. That’s where the conviction loss started. We started remaking every film popular in Tamil and Telugu.”
Here’s hoping to see even the much-deserving underrated stars on the Koffee couch someday.
