Hollywood Will Be Dressing In Black At The Golden Globe Awards For All The Right Reasons!
On Sunday, January 7, 2018, 75th Golden Globe Awards will be held in Beverly Hills, California, United States. It would be hosted by Seth Meyers. Yes, lavish gowns, bold statements and beautiful smiles, everything would be captured live but it still won’t be the same this year, it would be better. Why? You may ask!
Apart from a cocktail of well-deserved nominations, another interesting event that you’ll be spotting on the red carpet is, most of the actors wearing black gowns and tuxedos. More than 300 Hollywood actresses, writers and directors including Natalie Portman, Reese Witherspoon, Eva Longoria, Cate Blanchett and Emma Stone have launched a campaign “Time’s Up” to help fight sexual harassment in the film industry and other workplaces. By donning black ensemble Hollywood stars would protest against it.
“I am one of those women, so, you know, I don’t want to go into detail about that and I haven’t, but I am, and I stand with those women. I champion them,” Mary J. Blige, an American singer-songwriter said at the Palm Springs International Film Festival awards.
Blige has earned a Globe nomination for her supporting role in Mudbound, she shared that the Time’s Up campaign and the wear-black protest are important “because there are so many women that don’t get a chance to speak in other industries that are not the film industry, the music industry. It’s important for us to stand up for them so they can get a chance to speak.”
This campaign isn’t limited to women, men also face sexual assault in the industries and everyone is in, to support, regardless of their gender. “I think that there’s a power there that can be reached no other way except for when people fly in formation, when they are together, when they act as one,” American actress Holly Hunter aptly explained.
So, this year, superheroes won’t come wearing a cape but will be seen in all black!
As far as Bollywood is concerned, Shruti Seth’s tweet said it all. “I wonder if Bollywood will ever reveal its dirty secrets? It took Hollywood nearly 25 years to speak up, we’ll take another 50 perhaps,” she wrote. Let’s hope to see the similar change in Bollywood as well, much sooner.
