Significance Of Holi
As fun as it is to celebrate Holi with myriad colours and sweets, the festival has a significance way more profound than that. Here’ everything you need to know about Holi and Holika Dahan’s significance:
Story Behind Holi
The story behind Holi revolves around the legend of a powerful king named Hiranyakashipu. He was a demon, infamous for his cruelty, and superiority complex. He thought of himself as a mighty ruler and somebody who deserved to be worshipped like God. Blinded by his conceit, he actually ordered his subjects to treat him like God and stop worshipping any other Gods in general. However, his own son Prahalad turned out to be a staunch worshipper of Lord Vishnu, who refused to worship Hiranyakashipu and continued worshipping Lord Vishnu despite all the protests from his father. Angered by his disobedience, he attempted to kill his son. However, every time Prahlad was saved somehow by divine intervention. Tired of this all, he then turned to his evil sister Holika to help him with the task. Holika had a boon that made her immune to fire. She thus hatched a plan of making him sit with her in the fire. Unfettered and unafraid of death, Prahlad decided to pray to his God as they caught fire. To everyone’s surprise, Holika’s boon soon became ineffective because of her evil intentions and while she ended up turning into ashes, it was effectively transferred to Prahalad who came out unscathed from the fire.
Mythological & Cultural Significance Of Holi
As apparent from Holika Dhawan’s history, the first day of Holi is celebrated for the victory of good over evil. It is the celebration of humanity, love, resilience, and humility. Of course, the festival can have its own significance and value for you too. For instance, you can make it the day when you do away with all the negativity and bad habits and give yourself the promise of a better, happier life. Holika Dahan’s significance in 2022 is all the more profound for all of us given the challenges that all of us had to face in the year of the pandemic.
Why Do We Burn Holika?
Burning Holika has a mythological and cultural significance. Holi gets its name from Holika Dahan, which signifies consistently the triumph of good over evil. As the legend portrays, anyone, howsoever solid, cannot hurt a genuine lover. Furthermore, the people who dare torment a genuine devotee of god will be burned up. Demon Hiranyakashipu didn’t approve of his son’s devotion to Lord Vishnu, so to kill him, he took the help of his sister Holika. Holika received a boon from lord Bhrama of not getting burned when in the fire. Taking advantage of the boon, Holika took Prahlad in her lap and sat on fire; instead of Prahlad getting burned up, it was Holika who got burned in the fire, and here the boon couldn’t protect her. Prahlad was protected by Lord Vishnu and he was saved. To enact the same message, the triumph of good over evil, Holika is burned.
Why Holi is Celebrated?
An anticipated Hindu celebration, which later became famous among non-Hindu people group too. Holi indicates the appearance of spring after winter. It connotes the triumph of good over evil and is commended as a day of spreading joy and love. The celebration is additionally celebrated as a thanksgiving for a decent reap.
