Actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s shocking and tragic death by suicide has reignited the nepotism debate in the Indian film industry. Indian netizens have quickly caught on to the allegations made by industry insiders on the bigwigs and seem to have taken it upon themselves to correct the system by shunning all the star kids.
Thus, in the last one week, we have seen Alia Bhatt, Karan Johar, and Sonam Kapoor losing a considerable number of followers while they got brutally trolled on social media including other star kids and those they are closely associated with. In the ongoing purge, a video of Sonam Kapoor was dug out from the show Koffee With Karan in which she can be seen implying that she does not even know who Sushant Singh Rajput happens to be. Consequently, in the past few days, the actress has faced a lot of internet ire and has been trolled to the extent that she even disabled her social media comments over the weekend.
However, on Sunday, the actress decided to address all the hatred coming her way and in an absolutely tone-deaf move, ended up writing “Yes I’m my father’s daughter, and yes I am here because of him and yes I am privileged. That is not an insult. My father has worked very hard to give me all of this. And it is my Karma where I am born and to whom I’m born. I’m proud.”
The actress basically took to Instagram to show how she has been harassed in the past few days and the kind of comments and threats that have been hurled at her. And while there’s no denying that the abuses, insults, and threats hurled on these actors should itself be categorised as online harassment, Sonam’s elitist and tone-deaf tweet was as counterproductive as it could get.
I mean what does Sonam even mean when she says it’s her “karma” that she is born into a certain family? Is she implying that those born in less privileged homes happen to be there out of bad karma? She’s got to be kidding, if she does! Also, can someone please tell her that it is not the chances that she got that’s the problem, the issue is that there must have been so many equally talented or even more whose careers were callously hampered in the industry.
Not up for any of the star kids’ privileged tantrums, the Twitterati took it on themselves to school Sonam and make her see through her conceited statement. Here’s what they had to say:
Not sure about anything else, but tone-deaf tantrums by star kids is surely not what the Indian netizens seem to be up for right now!
