You and your vagina have a lot to go through together. From getting the first period to having sex for the first time, let’s just say your vagina is like your best pal. Now would you let yourself feel bad for your best pal? No, right? Case in point: a dark vagina or vulva. Growing up, in my teenage years, I always thought that having a dark vulva is a bad thing. Girls my age never discussed this and watching porn actually set wrong vagina standards for sure. So for the longest time, I believed that my vagina is unusual. Recently, I read an article about how women are going for vaginal bleaching and laser treatments for whitening their private parts. Just like how skin whitening is a phenomenon that scares the bejesus out of me, I thought that it’s time to discuss something as basic as a dark vagina.
So, while we talk about how all women have beautiful yet different vulvas, here are four things you need to know about vaginas.
Terminology
To start with let’s tell you that your entire genital area is not the vagina. In fact, the vagina is a part of the entire package we have. The outer part of our vagina is known as the vulva. This includes the lip like projection called the labia. Further to that, is the clitoris, the clitoral hood and the opening to the urethra and vagina. So to speak, the vagina is actually an internal structure along with other parts of our reproductive system like the cervix, ovaries, uterus and the fallopian tube.

Labia Comes In Different Shapes, Sizes & Colour
Your labia or the lip-like opening of your vulva looks different from what you have usually seen. (Well, in porn). Factually, it is different in shape, size and colour for every woman. Some may have a large brown labia while others may have a small pink labia. And they’re all beautiful.
The Area Around Your Vulva Can Also Be A Little Darker
You may have a pink vulva but the area around it could be brown in colour. In fact, the surrounding area can also be darker than the rest of your body. It is totally normal and happens to each one of us…differently!
Any Surgery Would Be Totally Unnecessary
Well, vaginal surgeries are totally unnecessary. If you’re worried about the colour of your labia or the area around it, know that all vaginas are beautiful no matter what colour they are. Anything artificial around your private part could be a reason to worry medically later on in life.
Now that you know this, here are a few more things you should know if you’re worried about your dark vagina. More often than not, due to hormonal changes, the area around your labia becomes dark over time. So, all in all, the vaginas that we see online and on the media are not the wide variety that exists in the real world. Just like all other changes in your life, you should be okay with this one too. It’s beautiful in every way. Plus that thing can take a pounding. Ever thought of that?
If you see a sudden change in the colour of your vulva, consult your gynecologist immediately as that could be a sign of other underlying medical conditions.
All in all, I have said it once, I will say it again: All vaginas are beautiful.
