Clean Girl, Who? — Tumblr’s Grunge Girl Aesthetic Has Returned From The Dead

Taylor Momsen and Avril Lavigne were amongst the first to cement kohl-heavy, smudged-out under-eyes as cool — and they supplied to us an entire mood-board centred around dark-lipped aesthetics. Rihanna, Kylie, and Lorde have joined the star-studded, goth-glam ranks in the past; and Angelina Jolie and Kristen Stewart are no strangers to the trend either.

Now — everyone’s subscribing to dark-lipped, smokey-eyed aesthetics. Mascaras have been declared passé; and lip-oils have been ostracized for how soft they are. Blush has gone into hiding, and highlighter has been exiled. Bella Hadid has surrendered her skin to intense smokey-eyed looks, and Lizzo has proffered the darkest shade of black to her lips. Goth Girl is back, and she’s hell-bent on imprisoning Clean Girl. Ahead — the prettiest celeb-approved iterations of the trend, and a simple step-by-step on transitioning into a ’90s grunge girl.

Tumblr’s Grunge Girl Has Been Resurrected, And How

How do you do grunge-girl makeup, then? Victoria depicts one of the simplest iterations of the trend. She doesn’t focus too much on the skin as much as she does on studding the eyes with colour. You can skip the highlighter and blush for this one; but a warm-toned bronzer is a must-have. She sweeps the product all over her temples and cheeks before stippling the face with freckles. The lids are coloured with a cream-based, jet-black eyeshadow, and extended into wings. A dusting of silver is layered onto the eyes; brow-gel is applied to fluff and tease the brows; and the hair is tousled a little bit to play into the aesthetic even more. That’s it. But our favourites have supplied us with more ideas. Take a look.

Bella Hadid

Bella channeled her interpretation of goth-glam just two days ago — sporting the heaviest Julia Fox-like smokey-eye on the lids. Hadid endowed her almond-shaped talons with a jet-black makeover, and punctuated the aesthetic with an all-black ensemble.

A shimmer-laden smokey-eye unravels itself all over Hadid’s lids — swiveling down to the waterline, and lending a hint of edginess to the under-eyes. Ringlets billow around the model’s makeup-free face, and razor-thin brows pepper the aesthetic in all of their super-slick glory.

Dixie D’Amelio

The VMAs inspired an affinity for gothic-glam in Dixie — because the influencer modeled a bottom-heavy cat-eye on each lid, and let her wet-glam, slicked-back ‘do, deliver a grunge-ish verdict on the carpet.

Lizzo

Lizzo might have played it soft on the eyes; but the singer declared her lips the show-stopper of her gothic-grunge aesthetic. Brushed-out brows, slicked-back hair, and a soft cat-eye accented splashes of jet-black on the lips — encrusted with a head-swiveling piercing smack-dab in the centre of her pout.

Dove Cameron

Most of Dove’s looks are gothic. This one is embellished with the sharpest, longest, feline flicks known to humankind, and the palest complexion.

Kourtney Kardashian

Kourtney’s contour-heavy aesthetic is centred around a smudged-out cat-eye embellishing the lids as well as the under-eyes. The rest of her skin exuded the softest traces of blush, gloss, and bronzer.

Billie Eilish

Billie’s perpetually grunge. Even with a slight stroke of black on the waterline, she’s the finest goth beauty.

Is the clean-girl under threat? Or can the two co-exist? You decide.
