Prime Minister Narendra Modi today during his address to the nation announced that the current nationwide lockdown will be extended till May 3. The lockdown was announced on March 25, and was initially to be lifted on April 14. However, given the spiking number of coronavirus cases in India, the government has no choice but to continue the lockdown in order to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus. In India, current figures have crossed the 10,000-mark with the number of confirmed cases standing at 10,503 so far, while 358 people have lost their lives.

PM Modi also added that each district in every state will be closely monitored until April 30. Post that, the government may take a call on easing a few restrictions. According to him, India is in much better shape than many major countries in the fight against coronavirus. “If the country had not taken a holistic, integrated approach and had not acted fast, then it is frightening to think what the situation would have been today,” he said.
