How To Apply Foundation To Give Your Skin A My-Skin-But-Better Finish

Applying a foundation to achieve a second-skin-like finish is no easy feat. It’s a major skill, and there’s a lot of room for error. We’ve all experienced foundation that piles up at unexpected areas of the face, separates around the nose, or settles into texture – exacerbating our pores and fine lines. Cakey foundation is the bane of any base-wearer’s life, and even the most seasoned pro can have a day where their foundation does not behave.

For babes who want to create an effortless base layer to make your complexion look like you have your fave IG filter floating over the top, we have just the thing for you! If you want to rake in a lot of  “OMG, your skin looks ahh-mazing!” compliments and not “Your foundation is so great!” – here’s how to use foundation so it looks undetectable and gives your skin a my-skin-but-better finish.

The Ultimate Guide To Make Your Skin Be Camera-Ready This Festive Season

Create A Dewy Canvas

First things first, hydrating your skin is key to acing a hydrated, healthy makeup base. You can slather on a face mask or chuck on a sheet mask. Make sure the mask is formulated with dew-inducing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and peptides. Follow it up with a moisturiser and give your face a quick lymphatic facial massage. This will help reduce puffiness while making your skin tighter and brighter.

Apply Primer As Needed

Primer not only blurs the appearance of pores and skin texture but also increases the staying power of your makeup. Folks with dry skin can use a hydrating, glow-giving primer all over the face. Likewise, if you have oily or combination skin, use a mattifying primer on areas that tend to get oily like the sides of your nose, around the mouth, forehead, and hairline.

Use Products With The Same Base Ingredients

If you want to prevent pilling and the look of a balled-up mess, we suggest using products with the same base ingredients. For example, if you are using oil-based base products, stick to oil-based moisturiser. Likewise, water-based products work best with water-based foundations. Let each product sink in before moving on to the next step.

Apply From The Centre And Move Outward

When applying a foundation, start from the centre of the face. Then, move on toward the apple of the cheeks and slowly blend out.

Pat Don’t Paint

Use the foundation brush to pat the foundation. Avoid swiping it on to prevent a streaky foundation. When working with a makeup sponge, make sure to wet the blender completely. Squeeze out the excess water and pat it on the skin. Alternatively, you can also use your fingers to apply the foundation but ensure that your hands are clean.

Add A Healthy Flush

Use a creamy blush to add warmth to your face. Go for the sunburnt blush strategy to make it look genuine and fresh. Start by applying the blush on the apple of your cheeks on one side, and trace it along the bridge of your nose to connect the apple of your cheeks on another side.

Blot, And Set

First, use blotting paper to soak out excess oil. Then, load up your brush with a featherlight setting powder and apply it lightly on areas that tend to get shiny.
