It’s been 12 years since Madhur Bhandarkar’s ambitious project saw the light of day and when Fashion, the film, first made its way to the theatres, it was the one-of-a-kind exploration on the subject. Mixing his gathered insights into the industry with fiction, Bhandarkar’s film released to both criticism from the industry it depicted and critical acclaim from viewers and insiders. The leading actors, Priyanka Chopra and Kangana Ranaut who starred as supermodels at various junctures of their career, went on to win National awards for the Best Actor (Female) and Best Supporting Actor (Female) categories respectively. In a recent Instagram post, Priyanka Chopra went on to speak about it as one of her “first truly immersive acting jobs”.
The plot followed one small-town girl’s (played by Priyanka Chopra) ambition to become a top model, with various subplots that explored the industry through different lenses. Though clearly, one can’t ignore that in some cases, its narration was myopic and played on stereotypes that the industry often comes to be associated with.
#FlashbackFriday: Revisiting Fashion
In terms of the wardrobes, the costume department saw some stellar looks come together to depict a recreation of actual runways and photo spreads, along with parties and more. In this edition of #FlashbackFriday, we explore the details that went into putting together the wardrobes in Fashion.
Recreating The Catwalks
The costumes for the film were overlooked by Rita Dhody and Narendra Kumar Ahmed, with offerings taken from leading designers to give the film a realistic edge. The latter himself made an appearance, as did many known names from the industry such as Wendell Rodricks, Atul Kasbekar and others. To keep the lineup interesting (and real), an impressive array of leading models were cast, think Kanishtha Dhankar and Nayanika Chatterjee bringing years of their experience to the film’s runways.
The actors too, perfected their walks and Kangana Ranaut came to be especially recognised for perfecting it. As it goes, high-end couture picks and gown in sync with the time (2008) were used for the catwalk appearances. Below, take a look at Kangana Ranaut and Priyanka Chopra’s showstopping looks from the film.
Editorials & Shoots
There was no death of fashion spreads and shoots as well; clad in couture and in-vogue outfits, the actors posed like professionals to give viewers a peek into behind-the-scenes stills from the modelling industry. Also glued in were a plethora of brands and publications through placements, depicted as the leads worked their way in advertisements and editorials alike. With precision given to detail, everything from the costumes to the hair and makeup was implemented in order to stand out to a tee. The result? Some impeccable stills that looked true to life. Here’s taking a look at some of them below.
Every-Day Wardrobe
With fashion being the central theme, there was no backing down on the day-to-day outings in the film as well, something that was taken care of by the costume department. As the characters progressed, moving through different phases and through towns, their attires too worked in sync. Take a look at some of the breezy and new-age looks that you could recreate even now.
Now that you have seen the stills, what did you think of the outfits as seen in Fashion?
