Influencer & Her Sisters Get Judged By Relatives & We Can’t Help But Relate

Growing up, I’ve been subjected to some of the most ridiculous comments: “Why don’t you eat something? You’re too skinny.” As I grew older, the comments evolved too: “When are you getting married?” or “Gain some weight, or no one will choose you.” Our society and its obsession with superficiality and getting every girl married baffles me and even makes me chuckle. But this is the story of countless girls like me who have faced such taunts and humiliations, often from their relatives. Just when I thought things were changing for good, that we were moving forward, I was hit by the reality.

I came across a reel by influencer and blogger Rida Tharana. She recounted her experience of attending her brother’s wedding with her three sisters. She shared that despite the joyous occasion, each one of them was subjected to the most random comments from relatives. And watching the video I was not only frustrated but validated too because it was all too relatable.

Rida shares how she was constantly questioned about settling down while her sisters were subjected to scrutiny about their weight and skin tone. Suggestions were made and judgements were passed. Take a look:

If you don’t feel uncomfortable or realise that we’re taking a step backward each day, then you’re living in a bubble. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, yes, but when those opinions turn into personal comments on young women’s bodies, it’s not okay. What’s most disheartening is that these comments often come from our family members, particularly elders—the very people who should be fostering a safe and supportive space for the younger generation.

But hey, as far as we women are standing our ground and speaking up for ourselves, it’s all good. We are so much more than what society often reduces us to, and it’s important to never forget that. Let’s keep fighting and pushing forward.
