Whether you’re a skincare junkie or someone who completely neglects taking care of their skin, a facial is a kind of pampering all of us love and appreciate. If you aren’t someone who takes good care of their skin from time to time, you must indulge in a facial every month. But with facials also come hefty price tags. Facials at salons and dermatologists can get pretty expensive, so it’s important you pick the right one for your skin type. But not all facials are made alike. While some facials will make your skin look good immediately, other facials may take longer to prove effective. So how do you pick the right facial?

If you’re suffering from issues like stubborn acne, large pores, dark circles and fine lines, there is something known as a high-frequency facial that will prove beneficial. Sounds very scientific, right? And it is as scientific as it is effective. Here’s everything you need to know about this revolutionary facial.
What is a high-frequency facial?

The facial device used for this stimulates the skin with the help of a mild electrical current. The high-frequency facial machine is fitted with an electrode that generates an electrical current when it comes in contact with the skin. This current helps tone the skin while rejuvenating and oxygenating it. It’s not as scary as it sounds, while you are (quite literally) treating your skin with electricity, you don’t feel too much discomfort, it’s a slight tingling sensation involved.
To get some more professional insight on the treatment, we reached out to Dr Harshana Bijlani, Celebrity Skin Expert and Medical Head of The AgeLess Clinics and here’s what she had to say, “A high-frequency facial uses a hi-frequency technology device to help treat and prevent stubborn acne, shrink enlarged pores and help achieve healthy clearer skin. High-frequency facial machines work in conjunction with high-frequency electrodes which are made of clear tempered glass which emit a small electrical current and help produce oxygen molecules to help your skin fight against acne bacteria. This is done for 10-15 minutes depending on the severity of your acne. High frequency helps eliminate toxins and acne-causing bacteria, increase collagen and elastin production, encourage lymphatic drainage, exfoliate dead skin cells and improve skin care product absorption.”
What are the steps involved?

Like most facials, a high-frequency facial too follows the same steps.
Step 1: Cleanup
The aesthetician cleanses your skin of makeup, dirt and pollution before moving on to extract blackheads and whiteheads and then moves on to get rid of any dead skin. This step helps cleanse your skin of all the impurities at the surface level and trapped within your pores.
Step 2: The high-frequency device
The facial device is fitted with an electrode and this is used on your face for about 10-15 minutes. Depending on the severity of your problem, the device is focused on problem areas. This step helps get rid of acne-causing bacteria, tone and firm up your face while getting rid of lymphatic drainage.
Step 3: Mask
Depending on your skin type and your concerns, step 3 usually includes putting on a face mask. This could be a sheet mask, a clay mask or even a rubber mask. The mask is left on for 15-20 minutes and further helps get rid of blemishes and acne.
Step 4: Hydrate and SPF
A good facial always ends with a quick facial massage using a serum or a face massage cream. If you are getting the facial done during the day, you must not step out without wearing sunscreen.
We asked Dr Harshana Bijlani to give us a quick breakdown of the steps involved in the AgeLess Clinics Anti-Acne Hi-Frequency Cleanup. Here’s what you can expect with your clean up at Ageless Clinics.
Step 1: AgeLess Signature Cleanup™ – Our signature tried and tested extraction process to remove dead skin, blackheads, whiteheads and all the impurities clogging your skin leaving it clean and clear.
Step 2: High-Frequency – High-frequency facial machines work in conjunction with high-frequency electrodes which are made of clear tempered glass which emit a small electrical current and help produce oxygen molecules to help your skin fight against acne bacteria. This is done for 10-15 minutes depending on the severity of your acne. High frequency helps eliminate toxins and acne-causing bacteria, increase collagen and elastin production, encourage lymphatic drainage, exfoliate dead skin cells and improve product absorption.
Step 3: Shangpree® Korean Rubber Skincare Mask – The Shangpree® Spirulina Mask, enriched with Spirulina, tea tree is applied. Spirulina has a high content of vitamin A, vitamin B-12, vitamin E, calcium, iron and phosphorus, all of which are vital for your skin’s health. It also prevents bacterial and fungal overgrowth that can cause acne breakouts. This super mask helps calm inflamed skin, removes toxins and gives you healthier glowing skin.
Step 4: AgeLess Signature Serums™ – Our special serums with a blend of the best active ingredients the world over to give your skin everything it needs. We choose a serum to fight acne that leaves your skin feeling soft and supple with a gorgeous healthy glow.
What are the benefits?
There are multiple cosmetic and healing benefits of high-frequency treatment. This classic cleanup uses the steps of a traditional cleanup and marries it with rich Korean ingredients and high frequency to help fight acne-causing bacteria, exfoliate dead skin cells and reveal fresher, clearer and healthier skin. In fact, Hi Frequency machines are dual in nature depending on the gas the electrodes contain. Neon (shows as orange-ish or reddish light) is great for rejuvenating and oxygenating tired skin and help with anti-ageing treatments, whereas argon (shows as violet light) is great for acne or oily skin related treatments, so it’s a great add on to any facial to boost the results, says Dr. Harshana.
High-Frequency Facial Machine
Looking to invest in your own high-frequency facial wand? There are a few options you can choose from and buy it online. If you are trained and know how to operate them, you can totally invest in your own instead of going to a dermatologist. If you don’t have any training, it would be best to go to a dermatologist to avoid any high-frequency facial side effects. Here is a high frequency facial machine that you can buy.

This high-frequency facial machine comes with different attachments for different types of issues. You can also use the high-frequency facial to stimulate hair growth and to treat and get rid of acne.
FAQs
Is it safe?
Yes, it’s safe. Over time, it will help lighten acne scars and get rid of bacteria. Just make sure you use sunscreen regularly after your treatment.
How often can you get this facial? How often do dermatologists recommend?
This again depends from person to person and the severity of your acne or scars. Your dermatologist will be able to guide you better. Dr. Harshana recommends you get the treatment once a month to keep acne at bay and reduce the intensity of scars.
Does it help with acne and acne scars?
“High-frequency facials help fight acne bacteria and also boost collagen and elastin, which could help lighten acne scars. However, it would not help with acne marks or deeper acne scars (pits). For more severe scars you can explore treatments like radiofrequency, derma roller, stem cell facial (PRP) and so on,” says Dr. Harshana.
How much does it cost?
The AgeLess Anti-Acne Hi-Frequency Cleanup is priced at Rs 2,250. You can speak to your own dermatologist to find out the cost of the treatment at their clinic.
Can I do it home?
“Yes, you can but you would have to invest in a high-frequency facial wand. These aren’t easily available in the market at least in India and they are quite expensive. As the high frequency is an electrical treatment, there are certain contraindications such as no metal jewellery, no watches, no metal beds, all of these would hinder the electrical current to pass into the right places. You also need to be trained to understand how you can do it on the active acne to help kill bacteria, how to do it on your skin where there is no acne and so on. These factors can be controlled in a clinic environment, while doing it at home you’re less likely to be able to pay attention to all the details,” shared Dr. Harshana.
