Netflix has done all of us a huge favour by releasing Emily In Paris right in time when the pandemic ennui was beginning to take over our very souls. Here’s an absolutely binge-worthy show, with breathtaking visuals (all credits to the Parisian vibe), a stunning cast, and a heady dose of fashion and French passion. What’s not to like?
Oh btw, the show also happens to be highly relatable for young women who might have relocated for work or are well-versed with the experience of doing so. I for one could relate max as I saw Emily Cooper (Lily Collins) falling head over heels in love with a new city while struggling to find her place in it. I moved to Delhi NCR for a job change a while ago and I really found the experience hard to explain until I watched Emily In Paris because it’s just that (mine was much more of a desi version, of course). Here’s why I could relate to the show so hard:
Soaking In A New City
New cities appear to be bigger, brighter, and more inundating than they actually are when we first move in. It is the same for Emily who is practically lost in the beauty of Paris and the French capital’s romantic milieu. She is constantly confused, can’t find addresses, and thinks of Paris as a rather huge city before she is told by Camille that if she sees it with the right perspective, it is more of a “small town” than a big city. Eventually, as she explores the city and gets acquainted with the neighborhood, she does get well acquainted with Paris, learns to appreciate its beauty with a changed perspective, and can feel the initial loneliness dissipate eventually.
New Work, New World, & All The Challenges
Within moments of her arrival in the Paris office, Emily is introduced to all new work culture, a difficult to please French boss who does not really approve of her ‘American’ ways, and colleagues who take a long time to warm up to her. It is a new world and the challenge tends to get all the more intimidating when you have just moved to an all-new city for an all-new job and yet there’s a sense of adventure. The show does a good task of bringing that out through Emily’s professional journey.
The Recipe To Get It Right
Even when things at work get tough and go nowhere according to her plan, Emily finds her solace in something that she is really good at, i.e. her marketing job and by extension her social media. Within no time she goes from some 200 followers on Instagram to 20k followers, all because she is really passionate about what she does, is being herself, and projecting just that on social media. In fact, right there is the formula to find your place in a new city: follow your passions + stay true to your real self, everything else will follow.
Forging New Friendships
Migrating to an all-new city is a big, big change. From adjusting to a new apartment to understanding the culture and making your place at work, everything’s a challenge. And yet all of it eases out the instant you make connections and new friends. It’s a change in the vibe for Emily as soon as she finds new friends in Mindy and Camille. They make her realise that while the French might be a “disagreeable” lot, it is not really the case with everyone. Oh also, please watch the show for all the scenes that show hearty meal, delectable croissants, and, of course, crepes that feature in the show. Also, there is wine, lot’s of it! Just a happy reminder that food at the end of the day is one of the best ways to acclimatise yourself to a new place.
Adding Romance To The Heady Mix
The rosy twilight sky and golden city lights. That one dainty street that you pass by every day on your way to work and the breeze from your new balcony that wakes you up every morning. There is something certainly romantic about experiencing a new city, all the more if the city is Paris. The limits are endless, there is just so much to explore, including people, of course. For Emily, this comes in the form of an array of suitors smitten by her American charms. Among them all, happens to be Gabriel, her neighbour and the new heartthrob that the entire world is going gaga about. The sexual tension is next level and you have to watch the show to see what I am talking about.
Fashion To The Rescue
How do you make up for all your nerves when you move to a new city? By putting your best foot forward, right? Emily responds to Paris’s romantic vibe with her sartorial charm. Seriously, each one of the outfits in the show is to die for! I actually went for a wardrobe overhaul and crazy shopping drive right before moving to Delhi to both gel in as well as stand out with my individual style. Emily does just that, way more fashionably, of course. You’ll find tulle skirts, breezy maxis, and lots of flounce. However, it is her statement jackets and handbags that we really dig!
For starters, here’s the off-shoulder skater dress that we think was quite a stylish way to proclaim that Emily has arrived:
Next, we are putting our money on all the bold hues and prints that Emily rocked well in contrast with the mellow Parisian lights and French fashion sensibilities:
Behold for the cashmere coats and quilted jackets have arrived:
Also, can we all take a moment and admire Emily’s version of the revenge dress? “I am not basic” she says and clearly means it:
Loved Emily’s glam face & that red mouth? Here’s how to re-create the look:
