Sometimes I’ll watch a skincare routine and people seem to be washing their face twice…..in a row! Seems like a waste of time right? However, after a little research and testing, it turns out this double cleansing thing was the best thing that’s happened to my skin.
Double cleansing used to be all about getting rid of tough makeup – think waterproof mascaras and long-lasting ‘smudge-proof’ lipsticks. But lately, it’s taken on a new role. It’s no longer just a way to clean off makeup, but a way to improve the overall health and appearance of your skin. Double cleansing is currently being lauded as a one-hat-trick to manage oily skin and prevent breakouts.
Today, we’ll be delving into why this straightforward two-step process, now a favourite among skincare experts and celebrities, should become an essential part of your skincare routine!
What Is Double Cleansing?
Double cleansing is essentially a two-step cleansing routine. You start with a heavy cleanser like an oil or a balm and follow it with a lighter cleanser – something that’s water-based or your everyday facewash. The reason this routine has two steps is because the first round tackles makeup, sunscreen, and the day’s grime, while the second goes deeper, addressing your specific skin needs like clogged pores, excess sebum, and blackheads.
Why Should People With Oily Skin Use It?
Regular double cleansing can lead to brighter, smoother skin especially if you struggle with oily skin. This two-step routine does more than just clean. It has a host of benefits that work to make sure the excess oil is controlled. For example, double cleansing helps maintain a balanced and healthy skin barrier and improves overall skin texture by removing the buildup of dead skin cells, excess oil, and pollutants all while cleansing your face without stripping your skin’s natural moisture (which a harsh exfoliant like a scrub usually does).
So basically, it cleans everything from your pores and leaves you looking fresh without drying out your face in the process! As someone who regularly double cleanses, I can vouch for this method by saying that my face is less textured than it has ever been before and my pores have absolutely stopped clogging.
What Kind Of Products Should I Use?
There are a host of different combinations you can use to double cleanse. Just make sure the first step is slightly heavy so all the major debris is removed from your face, while the second step is lightweight and will not clog your pores!
For step one, I recommend a cleansing balm or oil. Some people really vouch for micellar water too but a heavy product tends to add that plump-ness to your face after the second wash.
For step two, try a gentle cleanser or anything that’s water-based. Just make sure your skin does not react to it and that the consistency won’t clog your pores.
Follow with the rest of your routine and you should be good to go! Double cleansing might sound like extra work, but it’s a skincare game-changer, especially if you’re dealing with oily skin, makeup, or city pollution.
