Before June this year, few could have guessed that Dil Bechara will go on becoming the most important film of 2020. It was indeed a surreal experience to see Sushant Singh Rajput smiling on the camera for one last time, saying an untimely goodbye. And while Sushant really did shine through the film as the happy go lucky Manny, Sanjana Sanghi played her part equally well as the “Thodi Si Mushkil, Thodi Easy” Kizhie.
Dil Bechara is based on John Green’s novel The Fault in Our Stars and the character of Kizhie was thus based on the novel’s lead Hazel Grace Lancaster. And while we can keep talking about how Sanjana absolutely nailed the role, it would be more convincing if John Green did it himself, right? So here’s the thing: not only did the writer watch the film on the very first day of its release but also sent Sanjana a long message to appreciate her for adding life to the character and portraying it so well.
In fact, John sent the actress an Insta DM right after watching the film which she sadly ended up missing amidst a slew of other messages. Here’s what John had to say: “Hey, Sanjana. John Green here, author of The Fault in Our Stars. I saw the Dil Bechara film today and really enjoyed it. I thought your performance was magnificent–full of humor and heart and deep wells of emotion. Thank you for giving such wonderful life to Kizie, and in doing so, giving new life to Hazel Grace Lancaster. I can only imagine how difficult this whole process has been with the tragic loss of your co-star. I just wanted to say thank you thank you thank you for helping bring the film to life. I wish you all the best with what I hope is a very bright future.”
It was only recently that Sanjana discovered the message in her DM and was, of course, super elated after reading what John had to say. She took to Instagram yesterday, shared a screenshot of John’s message, and captioned it, “IT’S JOHN GREEN HIMSELF!💙 Could NOT resist sharing this moment with you all. And CANNOT be more annoyed with myself for missing this beautiful message for over three months.”
In the caption, she further added, “Thank you for these unfathomable words John. I will simply never be able to articulate what this means to me. It takes away so much heartache and pain. Thank you for giving us the most broken but beautiful world of The Fault In Our Stars, For watching our labour of love the very day it released, For embracing Kizie, she has both given and taken away so much from me. For giving us Hazel Grace Lancaster. It fills my heart up to know you felt I even came close to doing justice to the depths of her emotional journey. Indebted to you, forever. A forever fan. TFIOS all the way! ❤️”
Now didn’t that just make your day?
