Special occasions call for delicious cakes, but one need not wait for a birthday or an anniversary to enjoy the gooey goodness, right? Someone aptly said, ‘Once you realise you don’t need a special occasion to eat cake, the second part of your life begins’. With so many different types of cakes to choose from, we are spoilt for choice! Whether you’re someone who enjoys baking, or just love relishing the cakes, it’s great to know about the types of cakes that are available, so you have a better idea of which one to choose.
Different Types Of Cakes
We have come up with a list of some of the most popular cakes that you will likely see in a cake shop. Not sure what these cakes are made of, and what they look like? From red velvet cake to ice cream cake, and more, here are the different types of cakes with pictures that will also give you an idea of what they look like!
Black Forest Cake
This one is an all-time favourite! Black forest cake is a classic German cake, which is the most easily available in nearly all cake shops. Made with multiple layers of chocolate sponge cake, freshly whipped cream, and cherries, it has garnered popularity especially because of its subtle taste. For those who like the flavour of chocolate, but don’t want an overdose of it, this cake is an ideal choice. The chocolate shavings on top used as garnish make the black forest cake easily identifiable.
Cheesecake
Doesn’t the combination of the words cheese and cake spark absolute joy? Well, we can thank ancient Greece for giving us this rich and creamy dessert that makes any occasion extra sweet. Cheesecakes primarily consist of a thick creamy layer made of fresh cheese, eggs and sugar. This layer rests on top of a thin crust made of crushed cookies or sponge cake. Like it a little more crusty? Just sandwich the creamy layer between two layers of crust! Sounds yum, right?
New York style cheesecake is possibly the most popular variant of this dessert. It features sour cream along with the traditional cheese, sugar and egg mixture. Pair it up with a nice glass of red wine or just have it after dinner as a light dessert.
Chocolate Cake
Does this cake need an introduction? It is the most popular type of birthday cake, enjoyed by kids and grown-ups alike. Chocolate cake is something you can never go wrong with, and it’s a crowd-pleaser. You can find a lot of variations in chocolate cakes that are available in shops. Some are purely dark chocolate cakes, while some are also paired with mint or coconut to add a bite of goodness.
Ice Cream Cake
A fusion of two universally favourite desserts in one- what’s not to love? For the unversed, an ice cream cake is exactly what you are thinking it is- a cake filled with ice cream layers. There are several layers of ice cream with sponge cake or cookie crumble between them. It overloads your senses and melts in your mouth! Do try this one if you haven’t yet.
Carrot Cake
Bugs Bunny recommended a cake, and guess which one it was? Carrot cakes are criminally underrated. They aren’t as healthy as they sound, but are definitely more delicious. Carrot cakes are prepared by mixing shredded carrots in a cake batter. To add extra layers of flavour, brown sugar, cinnamon, walnuts or nutmeg, or a different combination of them are used often. The result? A sweet, moist, velvety delight with a tinge of spiciness from the cinnamon. The cream cheese frosting on top makes for a smoother texture.
Give it a try, and who knows, it might become one of your favourites?
Pineapple Cake
Pineapple added to anything will only make it better! Whether it belongs on pizza is a debate for another time, but pineapple most definitely belongs in cakes. There are no two ways about it. Pineapple cake is soft, moist, juicy, and one of the easiest kinds of cakes to make. It consists of layers of pineapple, sponge cake, and whipped cream or cheese icing.
Red Velvet Cake
Red velvet cake intrigues most people because of its unique red colour. Ever wondered whether it’s just a chocolate cake with red colour added to it? You’re not alone. Not a lot of people know how it is made. Traditionally, red velvet cake is made with cocoa powder, buttermilk and vinegar. The chemical reaction between the ingredients is said to bring out the red tint in the cocoa powder. Red food colouring is also sometimes added to give a bright red colour. Red velvet cakes have cream cheese frosting on top, and are very delicate and moist!
Rainbow Layered Cake
They say you eat with your eyes first. The rainbow layered cake is a delight for those who want their food to be a multisensory experience. This colourful and vibrant-looking sponge cake is a popular type of birthday cake that is sure to grab a lot of attention at birthday parties. All you need to prepare the rainbow colours in between layers, is some food colour and buttercream frosting apart from the usual sponge cake ingredients. Commonly plain vanilla is used as the base flavor, but you can find other creative and flavourful variants of this cake online.
Bundt Cake
Bundt cakes are recognized by their shape lent by the pan they are cooked in, and not its flavour. This moist, doughnut-looking cake is probably one of the simplest cakes to make. Prepare a batter of any flavour of your choice in the Bundt baking pan and put it to bake. Glaze it as per your liking, top it off with some powdered sugar and voila! You have your own Bundt cake. It is a light dessert that you can enjoy with your evening tea or have at brunch.
Jar Cakes
Jar cakes have become the new social media sensation. As the name suggests, they are quite literally cakes with layers of frosting or mousse, inside adorable mason jars. You can pretty much have any flavour of cake in those jars. Apart from that, mousse jars are also available in cake shops in a variety of flavours.
Swiss Roll
Swiss roll is likely to bring back childhood memories! Kids love this cake, and it comes in the form of a log. It is basically a rolled sponge cake with whipped cream, jam or icing in between. Swiss roll is deliciously soft, moist, and comes in various flavours such as chocolate, vanilla, butterscotch, etc.
Molten Chocolate Cake/ Choco Lava Cake
How can one resist choco lava cake? It usually comes in the size of a cupcake, with a rich molten chocolate center. The outer layer of this cake is perfectly baked, while gooey chocolate oozes out from the centre. It is practically melt-in-your-mouth perfection, and if you haven’t tried it before, you are definitely missing out on an experience.
