#BeautyBasics: Should Your Concealer Shade Be The Same As Your Foundation?

We’re pretty sure that you already know that foundation and concealer are the base of any makeup look. The primary job of both these products is to mask blemishes, large pores, dark spots, and acne. Foundations, as well as, concealers, are available in different forms such as powder, liquid, stick, and cream which can be chosen according to your skin type. The coverage among different foundations and concealers varies too and can be a personal choice.

A common question that many people have about these makeup products is that do they need to be of the same shade? Allow us to answer that question for you.

First things first, it depends on your motive. If you want to brighten your undereye area or the region around your mouth and the sides of the nose, you will need a use a concealer that’s one or two shades lighter than your skin tone. When you need to just mask the blemish, you can use a concealer that matches your foundation and skin tone.

Since concealers don’t have that much coverage, you need to use a foundation to even out your skin tone. Foundations are fantastic products to cover imperfections and breakouts and some even have moisturising and sun-protecting properties.

When it comes to using a foundation and concealer together, make sure to use a concealer that’s closest to the foundation shade. You have probably noticed that foundations come in a variety of shades, but concealer shades are fairly limited. These are usually just ‘light’, ‘medium’, or ‘deep’. As long as you have a concealer that’s closest to your foundation shade, you don’t have to worry about anything. The concealer will easily blend into the foundation and mask those pesky blemishes like a pro.

If you’re using a concealer to colour correct and brighten dark areas of your face, pay attention to your undertone. If your under-eye area is purplish in colour, opt for a yellow-toned concealer. If it’s bluish in colour, peach-toned concealers are the best. And, finally, if you need to brighten a dark, brownish under-eye area, choose an orange-toned concealer.

Final Thoughts – As mentioned earlier, it all depends on your motive. If you want to colour correct and brighten certain parts of your face, use a concealer that’s one or two shades lighter than your skin. If you want to just mask the blemish, use a concealer shade that matches your foundation. If you’re not a fan of heavy makeup, you can skip the foundation part altogether and just use two shades of concealers- a neutral shade to cover the spots and a lighter shade, to brighten the skin.

Happy blending!
