While the entire country is waiting, on pins and needles to see Deepika Padukone ace the role of Ranisa in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s period drama, Padmavati, the director has gone one step further – thereby, building our anticipation even more – by announcing that the actress is all set to portray the role of veteran Indian literary poet, Amrita Pritam. The biopic that is to be directed by debutante Jasmeet Reen is being produced by Bhansali and was earlier offered to Priyanka Chopra who later, dropped out of it, for reasons that remain unknown.
Deepika will be paired opposite Abhishek Bachchan who will be playing the role of Sahir Ludhianvi who was the man behind most of Pritam’s prose.
Bachchan who will be returning to the silver screen after quite some time has turned down all other projects to focus primarily on this one. According to a source close to the star, “Abhishek has begun preparing for his Sahir biopic. He will begin rigorous interaction with Sanjay Bhansali after Padmavati releases. But his groundwork on Sahir has begun in right earnest. He is regularly listening to the immortal repertoire of Sahir’s lyrics from Guru Dutt’s Pyasa to Yash Chopra’s Trishul. Abhishek’s father had the good fortune to interact with Sahir when he worked in Kabhi Kabhie and Trishul. So Bachchan Saab is able to provide plenty of invaluable inputs to Abhishek’s preparation.”
We can’t wait to see this one either, Mr. Bhansali!
