10 Times We Completely Surrendered Our Minds To Deepika Padukone In Period Films

The spell-binding magic Deepika Padukone weaves in period films is unearthly. It’s almost celestial. Her eyes, her poise, dammit, her presence speak emotions words cannot articulate. Between 2013 and 2018, the actor appeared in three Sanjay Leela Bhansali films — Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-LeelaBajirao Mastani, and Padmaavat — that imprinted her name among the best period actors of the millennium. And without a doubt, of course!

Postoast

There’s something about Padukone in period films that makes sense. It’s like whenever she appears on the screen, dawned in heavenly attire, you willingly surrender to the magic. Don’t believe us? Look at these 10 scenes from the actor when she bewitched the best of us.

The Times of India

1. Kashibai’s baby naming ceremony scene from Bajirao Mastani

It was announced that Kashibai’s infant would be called Raghunath when Mastani entered the occasion bearing gifts. She had come to honour Kashi and Baijrao’s son but got verbally attacked by his family on her character and her religion. This is when Deepika, as Mastani, delivered a thought-provoking monologue on how every religion has claimed colours when colours, in their essence, are neutral and beautiful.

2. Deepika’s entrancing ‘Deewani Mastani’ performance

Don’t know whether Padukone was in a trance or we were on seeing her.

Film Companion

3. Mastani was offered everything in the world, and she asked for Peshwa

This was an act of rebellion. Her life could be at risk because of this, but Mastani says –

4. Deepika in Mohe Rang Do Laal was unearthly

Those eyes, as deep as the ocean.

5. Rani Padmavati announcing how the war would end, even if Khalji’s soldiers dominate Chittor

6. The complete ‘Jauhar’ sequence in Padmavat

Rani Padmavati embraces the fire. Her resolve was indomitable, and that was Chittor’s win.

7. When Queen Padmavati was put on the test, and she answered all of them gracefully

8. Deepika’s energy in ‘Nagada Sang Dhol’ was something else…

She made you wanna dance like nothing else mattered.

9. Ram and Leela as Sarpanch and their heartbreaking argument

Okay was a fan of their chemistry in the film. And their coming together through this film was the perfect ending.

10. The climax of Bajirao Mastani

Sorry, if you find we have a slight bias towards Bajirao Mastani. Cinematographically, that movie looked epic in all regards and Padukone as Mastani was exquisite even while we sympathised with Priyanka as Kashibai.

Best in Bollywood

As previously, there’s Padukone supremacy in Period films. And it’s not that we don’t love seeing her in other genres, but she’s uncannily perfect in this genre. It’s dreamy. BTW, today also happens to be the Queen’s birthday – happy birthday to her!
