To quote Game of Thrones– winter is coming. Actually, it’s been here for a while. Enter your sweater weather woes- dry skin, flaking, chapped lips, red in all the wrong places. We are, after all, sensitive creatures. And while we have been through this before, the sudden onset of winter skin woes never loses its shock value.
That said, a change of seasons means it’s time to switch up your skincare routine. In the summer, we tend to opt for lightweight, gel moisturisers and cooling products to combat the heat. The winter, however, brings drier, cooler climates, which can seriously mess with your skin. As the temperatures drop, a few tweaks to your entire regimen will keep your skin protected until summer. So, this winter, we have decided to take a more pragmatic approach to seasonal skin health and identify the cold weather beauty blunders we should take care not to commit. Because, on cold and dreary mornings, knowing what skincare moves not to make is half the battle. Scroll down to know what to avoid like the plague to protect your skin against winter’s bite.
8 Skincare Moves To Avoid This Winter
Never: Skip An Eye Cream
A lot of us are 50/50 on eye creams and whether they are actually needed, but you shouldn’t go without them. Not doing so can make your under-eye look dry and crinkly ( not great when trying to apply concealer). Opt for an eye cream that helps marinate your eyes area in nutrition while you sleep.
Never: Forget Body Lotion
The skin on our body is more sensitive during the cooler months for some reason, so it’s more prone to dryness and irritation. Make sure you coat your body in lotion after you take shower. This will help lock in that moisture and your skin will feel smoother.
Never: Over-Cleanse Your Face
Over-washing your face is just as troublesome as not washing it enough. So if you want to nail a dewy and balanced complexion, avoid going overboard. Try to be as gentle as possible with your face-washing routine and make sure to use an ultra-gentle cleanser. Avoid scrubbing your face too much.
Never: Use Chemical Peels
While we love a good chemical exfoliant, but when it gets cold and dry, it’s best to take those down a notch in your beauty routine. Instead, opt for collagen and retinol-based serums that gently sloughs off dead skin cells without ripping off the excess oil.
Never: Skip SPF
We have said it a thousand times, but it bears repeating. You need to use SPF even during the colder months. Always wear it on your face, even when it’s overcast and rainy.
Never: Take Long, Hot Showers
It’s super tempting to take long, hot showers when it’s freezing cold outside but it actually does more harm than good. It can actually strip skin of its natural oils, so try to keep yours to a few minutes max.
Never: Ignore Lip Care
It’s good to keep your lips hydrated. You can apply your eye cream to both your eyes and lips to smooth and firm. Alternatively, slathering on an occlusive lip mask to seal in moisture while you sleep will help you wash up with soft, pillowy lips.
Never: Underestimate The Power Of Masking
Our skin is prone to dryness, so it’s especially vulnerable in the winter. Make it a point to use a face mask two to three times a week to give your skin an extra boost of moisture.
