The Beauty Girls Are Reviving These ‘90s Beauty Trends

As a ’90s kid, I remember MTV & Channel V featuring my (then) idols sporting half updos, tic-tac clips and razor-thin brows. And this year, all the celebrities are taking me back to school. There’s nothing more nostalgic than the revival of a trend.

Here are all the celebrities who have made my childhood pictures cool again (who would have thought?!).

Dua Lipa’s Side-Parted Messy Bun

Gen Z may have cancelled the side part, but Dua doesn’t care. The Levitating singer struck a pose with her hair styled in a side-parted messy bun that reminded me of Priyanka Chopra‘s look in Fashion (2008). The difference? Dua’s hair doesn’t have face-framing bangs.

How to achieve it: First, a side parting. Barring a portion in the front, tie your hair in a ponytail. Then, twist your ponytail up in a bun to get that lived-in-it look. Use bobby pins to secure.

Bella Hadid’s Razor Thin Brows

In a photo dump from fashion week, Bella showcased her barely-there eyebrows. Cue, Shilpa Shetty in Dhadkan (2000). Considering how long it took for my brows to grow back after I tried plucking them, this isn’t a trend I’d try.

How to achieve it: Don’t. But if you really want to, use an eyebrow pencil and trace out your ideal brow shape. Now, use this as a guide to shave your brows.

Disha Patani’s Colourful Tic-Tac Hair Clips

Disha has rocked every trend that’s circled back. Her recent look with tic-tac hair clips used to be a part of my high school wardrobe. After school, I would switch out my black tic tac clips for coloured ones, thanks to Genelia D’souza’s look in Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na.

How to achieve it: These clips can keep your hair tucked in place but Disha has used them as props. Either way, they’re so cute! I’m adding it to my cart, all over again.

Janhvi Kapoor’s Half-up Hairdo

Back in the day, there were very few hairstyle options for traditional outfits. If you didn’t have the skill to braid, open or half-up hair was usually what you would turn to. Janhvi Kapoor flaunted the half-up hairstyle and it reminded me of Kajol’s iconic look from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Her look here inspired most of my ‘going out’ hairstyles.

How to achieve it: This one’s easy-peasy. Divide your hair into 2 sections, and secure the top half with bobby pins or a cute claw clip.

Disha Patani’s Floral Claw Clips

Ever watched Mary Kate and Ashley’s Passport To Paris (2000)? Getting your hands on those claw clips back in the day was a shortcut to IT-girl status at every birthday party. Disha revived the trend and I’m gonna purchase some of these, just for nostalgia (and my Insta stories).

How to achieve it: There’s no set technique. Pick out random sections of your hair and add the claw clips to them.

Kiara Advani’s Braids

Dua Lipa and Hailey Bieber are subscribers too, but Kiara’s look instantly reminded me of Shefali Jariwala’s Kaanta Laga (2002). While Shefali’s hair was pulled into a ponytail, Kiara opted for loose waves.

How to achieve it: Braid small sections of your hair and secure them with elastic bands. You can either create some loose waves or tie the rest of your hair in a ponytail.

I’m gonna try ’em all (except the razor-thin brows) again!
