We can all catch a breath now because Cannes Film Festival 2022 has finally come to an end. This was a big year for India as so many desi divas represented the country on the red carpet and we had two really busy weeks decoding and analyzing all the looks. From flouncy princess gowns to delicately draped sarees, this year we witnessed it all on the international red carpet. Naturally, we have a lot of opinions on what we saw. Scroll ahead for our list of six looks that stood out and six that didn’t impress us at all.
6 Iconic Looks That Left Us Impressed
We say this with a lot of pride that our desi fashionistas gave us quite some head-turning looks on the Cannes red carpet. Here are the top six that made us do a double take:
Deepika Padukone In Her Maharani Avatar
Deepika Padukone ended her Cannes 2022 innings in an ivory Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla saree and a matching pearl collar. Every bit regal, the look was a reminder that there exist few garments as gorgeous as the graceful six yards.
Hina Khan Looking Like Cinderella
Hina Khan gave us her take on the modern-day Cinderella gown with her layered Skytten Couture look. Her Tiffany blue gown featured a risqué thigh-high slit and a plunging neckline. It was worn over an embellished bodycon mini for a truly magical touch. The fresh look def made a lasting impression.
Deepika Padukone Shining Bright Like The Sun
Colour was the king in Deepika Padukone’s Ashi Couture gown. The strapless taffeta garment featured a sheath silhouette and an elaborate draped detail around the shoulders. It was matched by an asymmetrical trail and emerald studs to add a pop of colour. We loved the look for its colour contrast as well as the drama.
Aditi Rao Hydari Looking Pretty As a Portrait
For her last appearance on the Cannes 2022 red carpet, Aditi Rao Hydari invested her trust in Sabyasachi and opted for a black portrait gown. An extension of the designer’s latest collection, the panelled tulle gown had thread embroidery all over it. It was cinched at the waist with the Royal Bengal logo belt and some colour was infused with a garnet pink velvet hairband.
Tamannaah Bhatia In The Updated Saree
Tamannaah Bhatia gave us her best look from Cannes 2022 in an updated saree by Amit Aggarwal. The plissé draped hand embroidered saree featured embroidered cutdana panels in an array of colours and had our hearts for the meticulous draping.
Masoom Minawala Blooming In Beauty
Masson Minawala killed it on the Cannes red carpet this year and left us particularly stunned with her Sophie Couture gown. Be it the corset bodice or the Cindrellesque skirt, we loved it all. That said, the multi-coloured intricate embroidery stood out for us as a lesson in how to do floral fits right.
6 Looks That Made Us Go, ‘What Were They Thinking?’
Never have we ever witnessed a red carpet without fashion fails. Festival de Cannes 2022 was no exception. Here are six looks that failed to impress:
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan As A Guldasta
It pains us to say this but Aish gave us the worst red carpet look this year in her Dolce & Gabbana gown. Aishwarya’s skirt looked crushed in the pictures and the cascading flowers were just too overwhelming. Nothing about this gown seemed to work.
Deepika Padukone Giving ‘Whatever’ Vibe
While Deepika served a lot of stunning looks in Cannes this year, she also gave a fair share of disappointing ones. Top on that list is this Louis Vuitton fit that comprised a fuchsia pink midi skirt, a printed white shirt, knee-high chocolate boots, and a handbag. We also spotted a Salman-Khan style link bracelet. Yup, it was as random as it gets.
Urvashi Rautela In Her Baggy Gown
Is it just us or did Urvashi Rautela’s Ali Younes gown actually look like a bunch of black plastic bags stitched together? And do not even get us started on the mismatched accessories!
Tamannaah Bhatia Killing Us With Details
Tamannaah’s Gauri and Nainika could have worked had it not been for a sea of details. From the mermaid tail to the peplum waist and cowl neck, there was just too much happening in this fit.
Aditi Rao Hydari’s Unflattering Fit
Aditi made her Cannes red carpet debut in a red and pink Mark Bumgarner creation. The look featured a slitted tulip cut gown that was layered with magenta silk. The contrasting fabric sat on the waist like a peplum detail and went all the way back to the end in a trail. This could have been a great look if the actress had chosen a different silhouette. The boat neck gown did not do anything for the actress though.
Regina Cassandra In Kartikeya
Whoever thought this outfit was a good idea, did Regina dirty. What are those sleeves and why on Earth did the designer create that neckline. This is not a dress. It is an abomination.
Well, here’s hoping that the Festival de Cannes 2023 red carpet proves to be equally eventful for India.
