The Internet is back at it again; with yet another trend spreading that Tretinoin, fondly known as Retinoic Acid, can enhance the growth of your hair over time. Simply massaging a few drops along the hairline, apparently, will do the magic. Because living your best Rapunzel life has never been more low-maintenance.
But is this trend the answer to your dilemma? I’ve roped in Dr. Madhuri Agrawal, Founder and Medical Director, of Yavana Skin Aesthetics, to discuss this trend with us and deliver her verdict on it. Her answer might surprise you. Read on!
What is Tretinoin and how does it work on the skin?
Think of Tretinoin as Retinol on steroids. A natural and synthetic Vitamin A derivative, Tretinoin is a prescription-strength retinoid that can slow ageing and photoaging and treat acne all at the same time. Dr Agrawal explains that it prevents the breakdown of collagen, stimulates the turnover of cells, and encourages the formation of collagen and elastin. This enables it to diminish the appearance of lines and wrinkles on the face.
Does this truly work or are these just baseless claims?
Dr. Agrawal cautions us against buying into the trend. Studies do show that Retinoic Acid, combined with minoxidil, can enhance regrowth and recovery. But hair loss is triggered by different factors, and some resolve themselves on their own. The condition is complex, and it requires a proper diagnosis; following which a unique treatment is devised for you.
If someone wanted to try it out, how should they go about it?
Dr Madhuri dissuades us from applying Tretinoin to the scalp as it can cause reactions and lead to sensitivity on the scalp. She recommends sticking to formulations that are FDA-approved in case you’d like to incorporate retinoids in your hair-care routine.
In other words, don’t. Your P.O.A. should never involve applying something that potent to your scalp because someone on the Internet is raving about it. So this trend is definitely getting a bye-bye from us!
