During Cannes Film Festival 2022, we spotted a lot of stand out Sabyasachi looks. While Deepika Padukone served her jury duties in a floral printed shirt, we saw Aditi Rao Hydari walk the red carpet in stunning monotone outfits. The vibe was retro and yet the aesthetics were very fresh. It wasn’t hard to tell that something new was brewing at Sabyasachi HQ and the recently-dropped White Wedding collection confirms it.
If you go to Sabyasachi’s Instagram feed right now, you will notice a change in mood. The vibrant reds and multi-coloured floral fits have been duly replaced by ivory. For his latest collection, the designer has created his own version of the White wedding outfits especially conceptualised keeping the desi shaadis in mind.
Not one to do done and dusted stuff, Sabyasachi has created his own version of the white wedding hue for the collection. “I have an unhealthy obsession with aged marble, the more it weathers and corrodes, the more beautiful, I think, it becomes. I’ve tried capturing its colour with my dyers for years now. The closest we’ve come is tea-dyed Bengal muslin,” he writes.
Here’s everything we love about the new line:
The White Wedding Lehenga
Behold the white wedding lehenga. It is minimal and yet so divine. We love how a muddy ivory fabric has been elevated with colour-on-colour threadwork in a brighter tone. Brides can pair it with elaborate precious stone jewellery for a one-of-a-kind wedding look.
Lacy Portrait Gowns
If this gown is giving you solid deja vu then let us confirm that you have indeed seen this before only in a different hue. The black version of Sabya’s tulle hand-embroidered gown was spotted on the Cannes red carpet earlier this week as Aditi Rao Hydari gave it a life of its own. We love how the designer has created his own version of the chantilly lace with thread embroidery on the gauzy tulle. Plus, the panelled skirt makes it looks like an elevated anarkali. This is a white wedding gown that remains quintessentially Indian in the soul. Now that’s a feat that only Sabyasachi can achieve.
Printed Silk Shirt Dress
Yes, we have seen a version of this silk shirt too on the Cannes red carpet. However, we do like the dress version better than the regular shirt that Deepika wore. The hand-painted print on the soft silk fabric is *chef’s kiss.* This will be a great pick for summer wedding guests.
The Printed Tulle Saree
Courtesy of Alia Bhatt and Katrina Kaif, wearing sarees for weddings is cool again. Well, in case you are considering one for your upcoming wedding, we recommend this printed tulle beauty with hand-cut English flowers, semi-precious gems, and crystals. It’s the subtle pista accents that stand out for us and yes, the saree is pretty close in aesthetics to what Katrina wore for her pre-wedding festivities. The saree looks like it has been pulled out from the long-forgotten trunk of a maharani and this is a great wedding wear option if you wish to exude some old-world charm at your wedding.
The Tonal Tulle Saree
There is something about tonal embroidery that we just can’t resist. The same applies to this hand-dyed tulle drape with thread work. We love the tiny floral details over the base thread work jaal. It looks like a bed of daisies delicately covered with baby’s breath flowers. It does not get any prettier.
Well, looks like we were right when we said that Alia Bhatt has started a new generation of Sabyasachi brides.
