Breastfeeding Twins: Handy Tips And The Best Positions To Feed

It’s normal to feel overwhelmed at the prospect of breastfeeding twins. There are so many questions that cross a new mother’s mind. For instance, “Will I be able to produce enough breastmilk? What position is best to breastfeed twins?”

Let’s not forget there are multiple myths about breastfeeding twins on the internet, such as—mothers aren’t capable of producing milk for twins, or twins shouldn’t be fed simultaneously. This kind of misinformation only adds up to every twin mum’s worry and anxiety.

But the truth is that while breastfeeding twins can seem challenging, the fundamentals remain the same. In fact, time and again experts have stated that with prompt support and proper guidance, mums can successfully breastfeed their twins. So if you are a new mum to twin babies, or expecting twins soon, read on to understand breastfeeding twins, some helpful nursing tips, and appropriate positions to help feed your babies with ease.

How To Breastfeed Twins

If you aren’t comfortable feeding your twins simultaneously, then feed the baby that is awake first

According to the American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP), the ideal way to breastfeed twins is to feed them simultaneously (aka tandem breastfeeding), to establish a twin nursing schedule. This means that when one baby is awake and ready to feed, you should wake the other baby and feed them as well.

Since your infants will eat eight to twelve times a day, feeding them separately can tire you out easily. However, having a fixed nursing schedule will make breastfeeding less taxing for you and give you more time to rest. In case you don’t feel comfortable feeding both the babies together, feed the one who is awake first. Once you get a hang of tandem feeding, practice a suitable position that you and your little ones find comfortable during nursing.
