Made in 1987, Mr India is one of the most iconic films of our time. Come to think of it, it is the first sci-fi thriller made in Bollywood. It gave us an epic hero (Anil Kapoor), a badass but legendary villain, Mogambo (Amrish Puri), and a fearless role model, Seema Soni (played by late actress Sridevi).
From Sridevi’s ‘Miss Hawa Hawaii‘ performance to Amrish Puri’s famous dialogue, “Mogambo khush hua,” the Bollywood film has had our heart.
Interestingly, producer Boney Kapoor and husband of the late veteran actress Sridevi has expressed his desire to remake the film.
Talking about the project, Boney told a leading daily, “The idea is to create a reboot first, and then, make a franchise of it. It needs to be made more contemporary. We have a basic structure in mind. We haven’t decided on a timeline yet, but intend to make it soon.”
The producer revealed that the film was produced on a budget of Rs 4 crores, which was unheard of during the 1980s. “We put up a large set near Versova beach. I was so happy with the costumes that I paid a bonus to the stylist. Amrish Puri as Mogambo was a masterstroke; he brought the character alive. While Sri was considered a glamorous star earlier, the audiences’ perception of her changed after Mr India – then on, she was seen as a powerful actress. Anil too became more legitimate a performer with the film. After Sri, I have even more reason to make the film now.”
Yesterday, Anil Kapoor dedicated Mr India‘s success to Ajay Devgn’s late father Veeru Devgan, who was an action director on the sets.
If at all, the reboot is made, we will surely miss Sridevi.
